On Saturday in Miami in front of a sellout crowd, No. 5 seed Agnieszka Radwanska dismissed No. 2 Maria Shapova 7-5, 6-4 to capture her first Sony Ericsson Open, and the $712,000 prize that comes with the victory. Radwanska betters her record this season to 26-4, with all four of the losses coming against world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka.
Sharapova, four years removed from shoulder surgery, has now lost the last four major finals she has reached: Wimbledon, Australian Open, Indian Wells, Calif., and Key Biscayne. This was her fourth appearance in a Sony Ericsson Open women's final: she is 0-4 in those contests.
In the other championship played Saturday, the No. 7 team of Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek rallied back against the No. 2 team of Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor for 3-6, 6-1, 10-8 victory in the men's doubles final. With the win, Paes becomes only the 24th player in ATP World Tour history to win 50 doubles titles.
