The world of design is constantly changing. 2012 has been and will continue to be a big year for design. A lot of design trends we?re seeing lately juxtapose one and other. On the one hand, we have the modern, contemporary trends and on the other we have the vintage, throwback styles. Here are 7 of the most prominent design trends we?ve seen thus far in 2012.

1. LED Lighting
LED lighting is a growing trend in 2012 probably because of its functionality and broad range of use. Many designers are finding a use for LED in the bathroom; particularly in the shower where we?re beginning to see is LED lights inside of shower tiles. The lights usually make up some sort of pattern when blended within the pattern of regular tiles and can be turned on and off at the owner?s leisure.

2. 3D Artwork
Another very popular, yet subtle, trend we?re beginning see is homeowners using three dimensional wall art as opposed to the traditional flat prints or pictures. This allows a room to have a little more depth to it and keeps any visitors interested and occupied; an effective and economical way to spruce up a dull room.

3. Incorporating Nature
More and more nature is being used as a tool for interior design. What?s popular this year ? Using tree branches as wall art or decorative standalone features and decorative rocks and stones. The branches can have stones stacked on top of them or off to the side to create a tranquil, Zen space. Also, the use of bonsai trees indoors is another aesthetically pleasing method for creating a modern, tranquil space.

4. Sectional Sofas
That?s right, sectional sofas are making a comeback. These pieces of furniture are inviting and if you like to entertain, they are perfect for bringing comfort to your guests. The most popular types of sectionals for 2012 are: the L-shaped couch, the chaise, and the recliner.

5. Vintage
The use of vintage pieces, or rather, using old stuff, is another design trend that is popular for 2012. There are many shops and stores that make brand new vintage-looking pieces that you can incorporate into your home. Vintage signs are an especially popular trend because not only do they look cool, but they also provide an air of class to any room.

6. Classic Patterns
Continuing with the trend of old stuff: patterns like ikat, chain-link and chevron are all making a comeback as well. No, they will not stay relegated back to the recesses of our memories. They have pushed to the forefront of 2012 interior design and you can find many of these patterns in a variety of home d?cor, such as wall art and furniture.

7. Eco-Friendly
Sustainability is another popular trend that has gradually gained traction over the past decade. Both designers and your average homeowner are embracing design options that are environmentally conscious. These options can range anywhere from choosing responsibly harvested hardwood flooring, to creating decorative art pieces using old mason jars.
