BEIRUT (AP) ? When the Hamas rulers of Gaza recently gave a hero's welcome to the ruler of Qatar, an arch foe of the Syrian regime, it sent a strong message reverberating across the capitals in Tehran, Damascus and Beirut.

The powerful, anti-American alliance of Iran, Syria and militant groups Hezbollah and Hamas, once dubbed the "Axis of Resistance," is fraying.

Iran's economy is showing signs of distress from nuclear sanctions, Syria's president is fighting for his survival and Hezbollah in Lebanon is under fire by opponents who blame it for the assassination of an anti-Syrian intelligence official. Hamas ? the Palestinian arm ? has bolted.

"We're seeing basically the resistance axis becoming much more vulnerable and under duress. So even if it survives, it's really under tremendous pressure," said Fawaz Gerges, director of the Middle East Center at the London School of Economics.

"The Hamas shift to the Saudi-Qatari-Turkish orbit represents a major nail in the coffin of the resistance axis," he said. "Now you are talking about Iran and Syria and to a lesser extent Iraq and this undermines the social element because Hamas added the very important Sunni dimension."

The axis is one of two powerful camps that divide the Middle East into spheres of competing influence. It faces off against the wealthy, powerful monarchies of Saudi Arabia and Qatar allied loosely with most of the other Arab countries and neighboring Turkey, which like Iran is Muslim but not Arab.

The fault line is sharply sectarian ? Iran and Hezbollah are Shiite and Assad's regime is dominated by the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam. Hamas, which is Sunni, had been the exception before it strayed. Qatar, Saudi Arabia and other Sunni Muslim-led Arab countries in the Gulf have been trying to stem the regional influence of Iran.

Also, the Sunni countries, along with Turkey, support the Sunni-dominated opposition waging the civil war against Assad's rule in Syria.

The axis had been gaining power over the decade before the Syrian uprising began in March 2011 and formed a powerful front against Israel and the key U.S. allies in the Middle East such as the oil-rich Gulf states. Iran has long supported Hezbollah and Hamas as proxies in its battle against Israel. And Tehran also troubled the west with its dogged pursuit of uranium enrichment, a program the U.S. and its allies suspect is aimed at producing nuclear weapons but which Iran says is for peaceful purposes.

Syria has long boasted about being one of the few protectors of militant groups fighting Israel. It is the main transit point of weapons brought from Iran to Hezbollah and a collapse of Assad's regime would make it difficult for arms to reach the militant group that has been exchanging threats with the Jewish state and fought a 2006 war with Israel.

The axis also spread its influence to Shiite majority Iraq, where the fall of Saddam Hussein and his Sunni-dominated regime gave way to a government controlled by Shiites.

Only few years ago, the coalition was becoming so powerful that King Abdullah of Jordan warned of a "Shiite crescent," meaning countries from Iran, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon.

A new boldness was seen in 2010 when Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah emerged from hiding for a rare public trip to Damascus, where he attended a meeting with his powerful regional allies, Assad and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The leaders smiled confidently and appeared relaxed in footage of their meetings, a show of force meant to deter and demonstrate the unshakable power of the "Axis of Resistance."

The uprising against Assad that erupted 19 months ago, amid tumultuous changes sweeping the Arab world, shook a major pillar of the alliance.

"The fate of the alliance rests on the future of the Assad regime. If Assad goes, Iran and Hezbollah will suffer and find it much more difficult to plan, coordinate, and communicate," said Bilal Saab, a Middle East expert at the Monterey Institute of International Studies.

The brutal crackdown by Assad's regime on the Sunni-dominated uprising was an embarrassment to Hamas, the main Palestinian arm of the coalition. Hamas leaders in exile, who had been based in Damascus since the late 1990s, left for Egypt, Qatar and other countries.

Hamas officials say they could not be seen supporting a regime that was brutally suppressing a popular rebellion, particularly since most of those rising up against Assad are fellow Sunni Muslims.

This about-turn also caused new tensions with the Palestinian movement's main financial backer, Iran. Tehran demanded that Hamas step up and support Assad publicly. Hamas refused to do so, but didn't break ties entirely with Tehran, for lack of an alternative source of funds.

However, another benefactor may now be stepping forward.

Last week, the emir of Qatar, a vociferous critic of Assad, became the first foreign leader to visit the Gaza Strip. In a way, it formally sealed the break by Hamas from the "Axis of Resistance."

The trip offering the internationally isolated Hamas leadership there an unprecedented stamp of approval and Qatar promised more than $400 million in development projects for the impoverished territory.

The Qatari leader's generosity will likely give him some leverage over Hamas' decision-making at a time of growing debate within the movement over whether to stay in the orbit of Iran and other radical groups or move closer to the more moderate Gulf Arab camp.

Syria's president has painted the uprising against him as a universal attack designed to destroy the entire "Axis of Resistance." Last month, Assad told Iran's visiting foreign minister that the fight against his government "targets resistance as a whole, not only Syria."

"There will have to be serious adjustments in the axis should Assad go and preparations in Tehran for the day after are, I assume, already underway," Saab said.

Hezbollah, which supported revolutions in Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen, Libya and Bahrain, backed Assad in the crackdown. That support turned much of the Middle East's Sunni population against the group they once looked up to.

The group came under renewed pressure and criticism earlier this month when a car bomb in Beirut on Oct. 19 killed one of the country's top intelligence officials, an anti-Syrian figure. Hezbollah's opponents at home immediately pointed fingers at the group, calling for the resignation of the government Hezbollah now dominates.

Iran, the wealthiest and most powerful member of the alliance, has reportedly sent billions of dollars to Assad to help suppress the uprising, according to a recent report by Times of London. Tehran has given Hezbollah billions since the group was created in 1982.

But now Iran is struggling to cope with Western sanctions that have ravaged its economy. The sanctions aim at thwarting its nuclear program.

The distress was all too apparent in the freefall of Iran's currency the rial, which lost more than a third of its value in a week. The decline is widely tied to the effects of sanctions.

Israel has threatened to carry out a military strike against Iran's nuclear facilities to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, who heads the Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard's aerospace division, warned that Iran will target U.S. bases in the region in the event of war with Israel.

"The question is not whether it (the alliance) will survive or not. The question is will it have the capacity to act offensively," said Gerges. It is on the defensive."

Meredith Miller, recovering from a hand injury sustained at day 2 of the Providence Cyclocross Festival (shown here on day 1), has turned her focus to breast cancer awareness. Photo: Wil Matthews | www. wilmatthewsphoto.com

On October 7, with two laps to go at day 2 of the Providence Cyclocross Festival in Providence, Rhode Island, Meredith Miller felt strong and in control. With five top-six performances in her 2012 ?cross season, she felt confident and ready to execute her race plan.

Instead, a crash and two broken metacarpal bones in one hand ended her day. It did not, however, end her season.

The California Giant Berry Farms-Specialized rider may be sidelined now, but her ?cross season is far from over. She told VeloNews Friday afternoon that she still has her sights on securing one of five spots for February?s world championships in Louisville, Kentucky.

After consulting with several doctors and visiting the Boulder Center for Sports Medicine in Colorado, Miller decided to undergo surgery for the spiral fractures in her right hand. Her checkup on November 18 will, she hopes, confirm her return to competition.

In the meantime, she stays fit by riding indoors, while at the same time raising money for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month through her team?s ?Pretty in Pink? campaign. Miller began wearing pink while racing cyclocross? in 2010, but has since developed the campaign even further.

?Wearing pink is great, but I felt like I was taking the easy way out,? Miller said. ?I wanted to do more.?

To date, Miller has raised $15,000 over the past two years for Hope Lives, a breast cancer awareness center in Fort Collins, Colorado. She aims to raise $10,000 this year alone. By selling socks, T-shirts, and bike jerseys emblazoned with the slogan, ?Pink is the new fast,? Miller is already approaching that goal.

She has also drawn attention and support for the campaign through an online raffle featuring her new ?cross bike, a SRAM-equipped Specialized S-Works Crux with Zipp wheels.

The entire Cal Giant cyclocross team ? whose men?s squad includes junior racer Yannick Eckmann; under-23 rider Cody Kaiser; Tobin Ortenbald, second this year at the national junior cross-country championships; and masters rider Justin Robinson ? is racing in pink this season to raise breast cancer awareness.

Miller aims to rejoin her teammates at races in California and Oregon in early December, race in World Cups in Europe over Christmas weekend, and contest the national championships in January. Racing during the holidays was not what Miller had envisioned for her season, but she said that, once healthy, she will do what?s needed to qualify for her fourth worlds team.

?It is a big deal having worlds in the States this year,? Miller said.

Yeast model offers clues to possible drug targets for Lou Gehrig's disease, study shows

ScienceDaily (Oct. 28, 2012) ? Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also called Lou Gehrig's disease, is a devastatingly cruel neurodegenerative disorder that robs sufferers of the ability to move, speak and, finally, breathe. Now researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine and San Francisco's Gladstone Institutes have used baker's yeast -- a tiny, one-celled organism -- to identify a chink in the armor of the currently incurable disease that may eventually lead to new therapies for human patients.

"Even though yeast and humans are separated by a billion years of evolution, we were able to use the power of yeast genetics to identify an unexpected potential drug target for ALS," said Aaron Gitler, PhD, an associate professor of genetics at Stanford. "Many neurodegenerative disorders such as ALS, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's exhibit protein clumping or misfolding within the neurons that is thought to either cause or contribute to the conditions. We are trying to figure out why these proteins aggregate in neurons in the brain and spinal cord, and what happens when they do."

In 2008, Gitler received a New Innovator award from the National Institutes of Health to use yeast as a model for understanding human neurodegenerative diseases and as a way to identify new targets for drug development.

Gitler is the co-senior author of the research, published online Oct. 28 in Nature Genetics. Robert Farese, Jr., MD, a senior investigator at the Gladstone Institutes, is the other co-senior author. Stanford graduate student Maria Armakola shares co-first authorship with Matthew Higgins, PhD, a postdoctoral scholar at Gladstone.

Most cases of ALS have no clear-cut cause. However, it has recently been shown that an RNA-binding protein called TDP-43 accumulates in clumps in the cytoplasm of spinal cord neurons in many people with the condition, and mutations in this protein have been found in some people with the ALS. Researchers like Gitler and Farese have been able to mimic the disease in yeast by expressing TDP-43 at higher-than-normal levels, which causes the protein to form lethal clumps in the cells' cytoplasm.

"In humans, the progression of the disease can take years before symptoms arise," said Gitler. "But in yeast, we see protein clumping in the cytoplasm within two days and the cells rapidly begin to die." With their model system in place, Gitler and Farese set out to see whether it was possible to protect yeast cells from this effect by tinkering with the function of other proteins in the cell.

In this study, the researchers discovered that blocking the production of a protein called Dbr1 in a yeast model stops the TDP-43 clumping and allows the cells to live normally. The researchers confirmed the results in human nerve cells grown in the laboratory and in rat neurons overexpressing TDP-43.

"In this study we made no assumptions as to how TDP-43 injures cells," said Farese, "but instead screened the whole yeast genome to find genes that might prevent the toxicity. Independently, both our lab and the Gitler lab found that loss of Dbr1, an enzyme involved in RNA processing, could do this."

Dbr1 serves as part of the cellular clean-up crew that mops up the bits of unwanted RNA generated as part of the protein production line. In our DNA, most genes consist of coding regions, called exons, broken up into several segments by non-coding regions, called introns. Cells can make many different, related proteins from the same stretch of DNA by mixing and matching different exons in a process called splicing.

When the DNA is first copied, or transcribed, into RNA, the introns as well as the exons are included. But the cell quickly splices out the introns, which are released into the cytoplasm as little loops, or lariats. Dbr1, in turn, clips the loops to open them and make them accessible to the cell's disposal system.

Blocking the production of Dbr1 causes the RNA lariats to build up in the cytoplasm. The researchers showed -- by creating lariats with a binding site for a fluorescent tracking protein -- that the mutant TDP-43 binds to these excess lariats rather than clumping. The effect is like using a paper towel to mop up a spill on your computer keyboard: binding to the lariats appears to keep TDP-43 from causing havoc elsewhere.

"Normally, TDP-43 is found in the nucleus," said first author Armakola. "But in the diseased cells, it aggregates in the cytoplasm and forms clumps. We developed a novel way to track where these lariats go in living cells, and we saw that when Dbr1 is missing, the lariats act as a sink to sequester TDP-43."

The researchers note that it's still not entirely clear whether the cells die because the mutant TDP-43 is drawing essential RNA transcripts or regulatory molecules away from the nucleus and into the cytoplasm, or because it's not performing its normal RNA-binding function in the nucleus. Both could contribute to the progression of the disease.

The results in the yeast, rodent and human cells, however, suggest that therapeutic approaches aimed at blocking Dbr1 function, or even creating artificial lariat-like formations to draw away the mutant molecule, should be explored.

"Next, we'd like to explore blocking Dbr1 function in animals such as flies, worms and rodents," said Armakola. "We're also interested in identifying small molecule inhibitors of Dbr1."

Other Stanford co-authors include graduate student Matthew Figley. The research was supported by the NIH, the Ellison Medical Foundation, the Packard Center for ALS Research at Johns Hopkins, the Consortium for Frontotemporal Research, the ALS Association, the Taube-Koret Center, the Hellman Family Foundation, the Pew Charitable Trusts, the Rita Allen Foundation, the Searle Scholars Program, the Keck Foundation and the National Center for Research Resources.

Pet costumes scare up huge retail sales - The Orange County Register

Margaret Vannek spends hours sorting and creating just the right costumes for her dogs.

On Sunday, she dressed up her fawn-and-white-colored Chihuahuas, Peanut and Pixie, as Robert and Giselle from Disney's "Enchanted."

Top 10 pet costumes

1. Pumpkin

2. Devil

3. Hotdog

4. Cat

5. Bee

6. Ghost

7. Super hero

8. Witch

9. Bowtie

10. Superman

The pair won "Most Unique" at a costume party at Chateau Le Pooch, a doggy boutique in Tustin. Peanut wore a black tuxedo from the ballroom scene, while Pixie donned Giselle's wedding dress complete with the signature red-haired wig and tiara.

The dogs, and their owner, will be working the Halloween contest circuit through the end of the month, with different ensembles for events in Laguna Niguel, Newport Beach, San Clemente and at home on Hallow's Eve.

"I think pets now are like a child and family member," Vannek said. "For me they're like my kids. I don't have children so they're it. I love to dress them up."

Vannek, a social worker from Irvine, is among a growing number of Americans expected to shell out a record $370 million this year to adorn their pets for Halloween. That is up $60 million from last year. The sale of pet costumes is one of the single largest categories helping make the holiday the biggest in a decade, according to the National Retail Federation.

Pet retail experts aren't surprised. In recent years, the pet- products industry has exploded and is one of the top seven categories in retailing, said Doug Poindexter, president of the World Pet Products Association, which helps pet- product manufacturers and distributors with trade shows and consumer promotions. This year shoppers are expected to spend a record $52.87 billion for all pet-related products.

Shoppers also are scooping up high-end dog foods, health food, doggy spa products, designer toys and clothes. The pet market has spread from traditional independent shops and pet chains to mainstream retailers better known for human products.

Companies such as Paul Mitchell, Origins, Harley Davidson and Old Navy offer lines of pet products including shampoo, attire, name-brand toys and gourmet treats.

Each year, the American Pet Product Association does a study of buying habits. The latest data shows the largest- growing demographic of pet owners are baby boomers whose kids are in college, said Bob Vetere, president of the Connecticut-based group.

"These parents are known as helicopter parents because they hovered," he said. "Now they're looking to hover over something else. The family pet has filled that void. Dressing them for Halloween makes them more social. It's also cute for kids coming to the house for candy."

Retailers have embraced the trend. Target, for example, has 12 new costumes for dogs with coordinating dog-toy accessories, said Kristy Welker, a spokesperson for the retailer. Costumes come in three categories, priced from $5 to $14.

Sam Stone, manager at Lake Forest-based Costume Castle, said pet costumes are huge. She said the store has one of the largest collections in the county and, just like children's costumes, she's running out of some sizes for pets.

"People will go out of their way to match the pet's costume with the family theme," she said. "If the family is doing Star Wars, they'll do Yoda for the dog. In this area there are lots of pet lovers. They will spend the extra $20 to make sure the dog fits in."

Danny DiGiacomo, who owns Russo's Pets at Fashion Island and at Irvine Spectrum, hosted her first Halloween pet costume contest in 1981. It was a novelty then, but now contests are everywhere, he said.

"There's a lot to the animal-human bond," DiGiacomo said. "Soon people will bring pets to Trick-or-Treat and people will pass out dog treats and biscuits."

Christine Green, of Irvine, said she'd be one of the first in line with her Maltese Coco if trick-or-treating for dogs were offered at places such as Fashion Island or the Irvine Spectrum.

"That would be my favorite," she said. "The more I can socialize her with people, the better she is. It would be great at shopping centers because you could go into the stores, shop and get treats that are safe."

On Friday, she is headed to Fashion Island for the costume contest at Muttropolis, a "boutique for haute doggies and cool cats."

Coco, her 3-month-old pup, will be dressed in "Too Cute to Spook," a handmade orange-and-black dress with a shear tutu and intricate detailing.

"I wanted an outfit that was easy and cute," she said. "She tried it and it fit perfect. I had to have it."

Green's daughter Janaee Maun and her Victorian bulldog named Victoria also will compete in the Newport Beach contest, along with Vannek's Chihuahuas, Peanut and Pixie, for a swag bag in the costume contest. The store will have a runway with judges. The event draws a crowd of spectators, said Kristy Garza, assistant store manager.

At Muttropolis, a family-owned chain of three stores, costume sales are up 24 percent from last year. The Newport Beach shop did so well, that Garza said she had to backfill from the company's two San Diego County stores. There are Halloween-themed collars and leashes, costumes and intricate handmade pieces. Prices range $12 to $90.

Green said she can't wait for the party on Friday.

"It's like a night out, just walking the shops in Fashion Island with your dogs," she said. "If you're going places with your dog, you'll dress them up for parties. They are part of your life and your family."

Moderate drinking decreases number of new brain cells

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? Drinking a couple of glasses of wine each day has generally been considered a good way to promote cardiovascular and brain health. But a new Rutgers University study indicates that there is a fine line between moderate and binge drinking -- a risky behavior that can decrease the making of adult brain cells by as much as 40 percent.

In a study posted online and scheduled to be published in the journal Neuroscience on November 8, lead author Megan Anderson, a graduate student working with Tracey J. Shors, Professor II in Behavioral and Systems Neuroscience in the Department of Psychology, reported that moderate to binge drinking -- drinking less during the week and more on the weekends -- significantly reduces the structural integrity of the adult brain.

"Moderate drinking can become binge drinking without the person realizing it," said Anderson."In the short term there may not be any noticeable motor skills or overall functioning problems, but in the long term this type of behavior could have an adverse effect on learning and memory."

Shors and Anderson worked with postdoctoral fellow Miriam Nokia from the University of Jyvaskyla in Finland to model moderate to heavy drinking in humans using rodents that reached a blood alcohol level of 0.08 percent -- the legal driving limit in the United States and many other countries -- and found that brain cell production was affected negatively.

The researchers discovered that at this level of intoxication in rats -- comparable to about 3-4 drinks for women and five drinks for men -- the number of nerve cells in the hippocampus of the brain were reduced by nearly 40 percent compared to those in the abstinent group of rodents. The hippocampus is a part of the brain where the new neurons are made and is also known to be necessary for some types of new learning.

This level of alcohol intake was not enough to impair the motor skills of either male or female rats or prevent them from associative learning in the short-term. Still, Anderson said, th

is substantial decrease in brain cell numbers over time could have profound effects on the structural plasticity of the adult brain because these new cells communicate with other neurons to regulate brain health.

"If this area of your brain was affected every day over many months and years, eventually you might not be able to learn how to get somewhere new or to learn something new about your life," said Anderson, a graduate fellow in the Department of Neuroscience and Cell Biology. "It's something that you might not even be aware is occurring."

According to the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, men who drink 14 drinks a week and women who drink seven are considered at-risk drinkers. Although college students commonly binge drink, according to the institute, 70 percent of binge drinking episodes involved adults age 26 and older.

"This research indicates that social or daily drinking may be more harmful to brain health than what is now believed by the general public," she said.

Patent losses hit AstraZeneca harder than rivals

LONDON (Reuters) - Three of Europe's top drugmakers reported falls in third-quarter earnings on Thursday, hurt by patent losses, but the common story hides different trajectories at the rival groups.

While AstraZeneca faces years of continuing sales declines, due to a lack of new drugs to replace those losing protection, Sanofi and Novartis are turning the corner.

Revenues at the British group are expected to tumble 25 percent between 2011 and 2016, while Sanofi of France will grow 21 percent and Swiss-based Novartis 9 percent over the same period, according to Thomson Reuters consensus forecasts.

"In Europe, AstraZeneca will be the only company with declining sales in the coming years," said Britta Holt of Fitch Ratings.

"Novartis is in an excellent position, with a full pipeline and strong diversification, and Sanofi is also on the right track."

All three companies are going through a widely anticipated "cliff" of patent expiries that has opened the door to cheaper generics, and the quarter to end-September was one of the heaviest for such losses.

That problem is being compounded by austerity measures in major Western markets, notably the European Union, which is forcing companies to think up creative new ways to sell their products.

AstraZeneca's sales slumped by a bigger-than-expected 19 percent to $6.68 billion in the third quarter, hit particularly by loss of exclusivity on antipsychotic Seroquel, as "core" earnings per share, which exclude some items, slid 12 percent.

The decline underscores the challenges confronting the drugmaker's new chief executive, Pascal Soriot, a one-time vet who joined AstraZeneca three weeks ago from highly-rated Swiss rival Roche.

Soriot acknowledged a key priority was "to restore the company to growth", something industry analysts believe will require both a stepped-up pace of acquisitions and a re-focusing of some marketing operations.

"One of the critical things we need to do in the mid-term is to bolster our pipeline and that will rely on business development activities, there is no question about it," Soriot said during a conference call with reporters.

BETTER PLACE

Rivals Sanofi and Novartis, by contrast, are in a better place, despite also having been through a difficult third quarters.

"Sanofi very simply doesn't have much further sales losses to go," said Fabian Wenner, head of European healthcare at Kepler Capital Markets. "We are back to a sustainable basis to really grow from here."

Sanofi lifted revenue by 3.3 percent to 9.04 billion euros ($11.7 billion) in the quarter, although underlying earnings per share were down 6.1 percent.

The group now expects 2012 earnings to fall 12 percent in 2012, compared with its previous guidance for a decline of up to 15 percent, helped by demand for diabetes and rare disease drugs.

"We are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel," said chief executive Chris Viehbacher.

Novartis third-quarter sales fell 7 percent to $13.81 billion, which was short of analyst forecasts, due to weak performances by consumer health, vaccines and the Sandoz generics business. Core earnings per share were down 8 percent.

The Swiss company's pharmaceuticals division put in a robust performance, thanks to strong showings from relatively new medicines that are the key to future growth, including eye drug Lucentis, Gilenya for multiple sclerosis, and cancer treatments Tasigna and Afinitor.

Funeral, burial for Florida student is in Miami

The funeral and burial for University of Florida student Christian Aguilar is being held in Miami.

The funeral mass is Tuesday at St. Dominic's Catholic Church and is open to the public. The services were donated.

Aguilar's father, Carlos, said in a statement the family has found some peace in finding the body and "being able to give him a proper burial."

Aguilar's remains were found Oct. 12 in rural Levy County. An 18-year-old friend of Aguilar's, Pedro Bravo, has been charged with first-degree murder.

Two of Aguilar's aunts in Colombia have been granted nonimmigrant visas to travel to Florida for the funeral.

Water could flow on Mars, model suggests; Scientists look at melting and evaporation of frozen brines

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? University of Arkansas researchers have created a model that might explain how water could produce the flow patterns seen by a spacecraft orbiting Mars.

Research professor Vincent Chevrier and former Doctoral Academy Fellow Edgard Rivera-Valentin, now a postdoctoral associate at Brown University, published their findings in a recent edition of the journal Geophysical Research Letters.

The University of Arkansas researchers studied small flow features originally identified by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and detailed in a July 2011 paper published in Science magazine. These flow features, which appear and disappear with the seasons and show a strong preference for equator facing slopes, indicate the possible presence of liquid on the Red Planet. Chevrier and Rivera-Valentin have constructed the most comprehensive model to date of the behavior of water-and-salt combinations called brines to show that frozen water could melt, flow and then evaporate, creating these flow features on Mars.

Salts can lower the melting point of water, so the researchers used different forms of salt known to form on Mars to calculate what would melt, how much would become liquid and how long the liquid would last from the time it went from freezing to evaporation. They based their model on soils up to 20 centimeters deep, because beyond that depth the seasonal temperatures would not affect the freezing and melting aspects of the salt-water mixtures.

"We had to find a salt-water mixture that would come and go," in other words, something not completely liquid or solid, said Chevrier, a research assistant professor in the Arkansas Center for Space and Planetary Sciences in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. They found that calcium chloride fits the bill.

"In one day we could form enough liquid to create these flow features on the surface," he said. The researcher's model also explained why the flow features disappeared by incorporating evaporation into the model.

"The easier it becomes to melt, the easier it becomes to evaporate," Chevrier said. At low concentrations of brine, "as soon as it melts, it evaporates and disappears." However, the researchers showed that they could melt enough brine so that it would not completely evaporate, thus creating conditions that might explain the flow features. Their model fits with the seasonal change in flow observations, with the flows occurring on equator facing slopes and with seasonal changes. Also, high surface evaporation rates as demonstrated in their model explain why, if there is water, it would disappear relatively quickly and why imaging spectrometry on Mars has not identified water signatures.

"No other current model really explains all the observations," Chevrier said.

Obama, Romney camps square off on foreign policy before - Nola.com

WASHINGTON -- On the eve of their final presidential debate, Mitt Romney and Barack Obama -- through their allies -- squared off Sunday over which candidate would best protect the nation's interests and security abroad with just two weeks left in a race that polls show is increasingly tight.

Both candidates stayed largely out of view, preparing vigorously for their Monday face-off focused on foreign policy. The debate begins at 8 p.m. CDT.

Republicans accused Obama of leaking word of possible negotiations with Iran in pursuit of political gain. Democrats shot back, arguing that Romney and his party are the ones playing politics with national security.

The haggling played out on Sunday news shows at a critical time for Romney and Obama, whose marathon race has become exceedingly close as it lurches toward its November conclusion. Early and absentee voting are already under way in many of the most competitive states, upping the pressure on both candidates to lock in supporters.

Two weeks out, the race appears to be tied, with both candidates taking 47 percent among likely voters in a Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll released Sunday that reflected a boost of support for Romney following his lauded performance in the first debate in early October.

Romney's top supporters launched sweeping condemnations of Obama's handling of foreign policy, assailing him over a deadly attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, and arguing that under the president's negligent watch, Iran has crept closer to obtaining a nuclear weapon.

Republican Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio, who played Obama in Romney's debate preparations, said a new report claiming the U.S. and Iran had agreed to direct negotiations seemed like "another example of a national security leak from the White House."

"They've done a lot of that," Portman said, alluding to accusations over the summer that Obama's administration was leaking information to bolster his political prospects ahead of the election. He was echoed by Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who called the timing of the report "pretty obvious."

The White House said Saturday that while it is prepared for direct talks with Iran, there's no current agreement to meet. On Sunday, Obama's backers credited him for isolating Iran within the global community and adopting effective sanctions that have crippled the Persian Gulf nation.

"For two years, the president traveled the world putting together a withering international coalition. And now the sanctions that they agreed on are bringing the Iranian economy to its knees," said David Axelrod, a senior Obama adviser. "They're feeling the heat. And that's what the sanctions were meant to do."

Romney, taking a break from debate prep Sunday in Delray Beach, Fla., declined to answer a reporter's question about whether he would be open to one-on-one talks with Iran.

Still, Obama's allies were wedged into a defensive posture as Republicans undertook an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink approach to deflating Obama's foreign policy record. Graham said the Libya attack reflected "one of the most major breakdowns of national security in a very long time." Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., in a clear nod to Cuban-American voters in his battleground state, even suggested Obama's loosening of travel restrictions to Cuba had provided a source of cash for the Castro regime and undermined political freedoms.

Democrats were ready with indictments of their own. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said the House GOP's release Friday of 166 pages of Libya-related documents had put lives in danger.

"People around the world will now know that you're at risk if you cooperate with the United States," said Emanuel, Obama's former chief of staff.

Romney's supporters waxed optimistic that the race is trending in the Republican's direction, even in crucial states like Ohio that Obama won four years ago and where unemployment is on the decline. Portman said he's traversed his home state over the past two weeks on behalf of Romney and likes what he's seeing on the ground.

"The enthusiasm energy is on our side this year. I mean, it's not like 2008 at all," he said.

Both candidates dedicated their weekend to intensive study for the debate; Obama huddled with advisers in Maryland and Romney with his team in Florida.

On the agenda were Iran-Israel tensions, China, terrorism and the war in Afghanistan -- all subjects expected to come up Monday in the 90-minute encounter moderated by CBS News' Bob Schieffer. Although polls show the economy is of top concern to most voters, global affairs have cropped up as a key issue in the final weeks due to unrest in Libya, Syria and elsewhere.

Romney paused his preparations to attend church with his wife Sunday morning and to watch his traveling press corps play touch football against his senior staff. The former Massachusetts governor presided over a coin toss on the beach, then gathered his aides to cheer them on.

"That's right, don't worry about injuries guys, this counts. Win," he joked.

Romney didn't talk politics, refusing to answer a question about whether, if elected, he would be open to direct talks with Iran. Questions from reporters about the new poll and Monday's debate likewise went unanswered.

Obama arrived Friday at Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland's Catoctin Mountains, where he's been holding 12-hour practice sessions, starting with policy discussions at 10 a.m. Obama and his team hold mock debates in the evening in a set designed to look like the one in Boca Raton, Fla., where the two White House hopefuls will square off for the last time. Ron Klain, a former White House aide brought back for debate prep, is playing the role of Schieffer.

Axelrod and Portman spoke on NBC's "Meet the Press," while Emanuel appeared on ABC's "This Week." Graham spoke on "Fox News Sunday" and Rubio on CBS' "Face the Nation."

Amir Khan signs John Joe Nevin ? Boxing News

Amir Khan signed Irish fighter John Joe Nevin for his newly formed Super Fight Promotions. Last month, Khan signed his younger brother Haroon Khan with the promotions. Haroon Khan is yet to make his professional debut but Khan is hopeful that his younger brother would make it to the top. Similarly, Khan is also quite impressed with Nevin, the 23-year-old fighter who won a super bantamweight silver medal this year in the Olympics.

Nevin also holds the credit of defeating Oscar Valdez of Mexico in the quarterfinals, something that surely takes him above other young fighters.

?When I saw John Joe Nevin at the Olympics, he really impressed me and I knew right away he was a real talent,? said Khan. ?He's slick, moves well and has a lot of attributes that I know will take him very far as a professional. I'm extremely pleased that we have managed to bring him to Super Fight Promotions because he's exactly the type of young, exciting and gifted talent we want under our banner.?

Not just the Olympics, Nevin also stands as a two-time world amateur bronze champion and five-time national amateur champion. He is yet to make his professional debut though and speculations are that it would happen on January 19 in Manchester, England.

?We have high hopes for him and under Super Fight Promotions he will have the best platform in which to fulfill his enormous potential,? Khan added.

It should be noted here that Khan?s newly formed promotions has already garnered enough response to be a success in the near future. Unlike other promotions, Khan believes his promotion will go beyond the norms.

On the other hand, Nevin expressed his excitement for signing up with the Bolton proud?s promotion, saying he is looking forward to continuing his relationship with Super Fight Promotions.

According to Nevin, he decided to work with Khan as he believes the latter is a world class fighter who understands the needs of a boxer. Nevin further said that since Khan himself is an Olympic medallist, he would understand the route the Irish needs to take in order to reach the acme of success in the world of boxing.?

Steinbrenner would have issued a public apology

NEW YORK (AP) ? George Steinbrenner would have issued a public apology.

After leading the league in wins this year, the New York Yankees didn't just lose to Detroit in the AL championship series. They got swept in one of the more humiliating moments in the team's history.

The four-game wipeout made headlines ? A-Rod's benching, Derek Jeter's injury, Robinson Cano's slump. But it also revealed serious cracks in the foundation, showing a team full of aging All-Stars at the plate, in the field and on the mound that suddenly seems a long, long way from championship caliber.

After Thursday night's season-ending 8-1 loss to the Tigers, Andy Pettitte said, "Obviously, we're all getting older."

Myths About Working Moms | Toddler Times

workingmoms 200x300 11 Myths About Mothers Who Work Outside of the HomeIt took me a long time and a shiny new job, but I have to say that I L-O-V-E being a working mom these days.

I love the challenge in the office but I love that my new job is fewer hours, meaning more time with Harrison.? I love how much my kid loves his school but I also love my paycheck.

Last week, my post on why daycare rocks a box of unicorn sprinkles was syndicated on Yahoo! Shine and of course the comments came flooding in.? Mostly about how I shouldn?t have children if I can?t be with them and how selfish women like me are what is wrong with the world.? Not like it?s 2012 with women?s liberation and education and a crashing economy that requires many of us to go back to work after having babies.? That?s just the crazy in me talking, I suppose.

In response, I thought I would try and debunk some of the ?myths? surrounding women that work outside of the home:

    We only work for money

There's a lot of reasons that women choose to return to work - finances, health care benefits, certifications, or just because she loves to work.

Personally, I don't get work emails on my phone. We have family dinner & we go to the park regularly. I save lunch hours to attend daycare functions, like his fall party next week. I try to not let my office life effect things that Harry wants to do.
