Pressure on Google over child sex abuse

PRESSURE is building on internet giant Google to fall in line with other search engines in doing more to tackle child sex abuse images online.

Yahoo! and Microsoft?s Bing have both agreed that a pop-up warning will appear when people enter child abuse-sensitive terms into their search engines.

But though the moves have been welcomed by campaigners, Google, the world?s leading search engine, has resisted taking such a step, claiming it would not deter paedophiles, and says it is working on its own system.

Bing?s warning system will only operate in Britain. It will react to a list of terms drawn up by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (Ceop). Using such terms will trigger a warning, which reads; ?Warning! Child abuse material is illegal?, and gives links to counselling services. Yahoo! is said to be devising a similar alert system.

Andy Baker, deputy chief executive of Ceop, said: ?While the Bing project isn?t the whole solution, I hope it goes some way to making those who are curious about searching for indecent images think again.?

The development has come after Prime Minister David Cameron attacked web companies, accusing them of neglecting a ?moral? duty to combat the rise of child abuse on line.

Meanwhile, Claire Perry, a Tory MP and Cameron?s adviser on childhood, urged the Church of England to ?put their money where their mouth is? and apply pressure for it to act, after it was shown that the church?s pension fund has a ?5.7 million stake in the company. ?

A Google spokeswoman said: ?Child abuse imagery is illegal and we have a zero tolerance policy to it. We use purpose-built technology and work with child safety organisations like the Internet Watch Foundation to find, remove and report it. We are working with experts on effective ways to deter anyone tempted to look for this sickening material.?

Mali due to vote for president

Polls are due to open across Mali for a presidential election aimed at reuniting the country after months of political turmoil.

Security will be tight, with many areas still recovering after a northern rebellion and coup that resulted in foreign military intervention.

There are 27 candidates and if no outright winner emerges, the voting goes to a second round on 11 August.

However, some analysts have questioned whether Mali is ready for the election.

Mali crisis timeline

  • October 2011: Ethnic Tuaregs launch new rebellion after returning with weapons from Libya, where they had fought for Gaddafi
  • March 2012: Military officers depose President Amadou Toumani Toure over handling of rebellion
  • April 2012: Tuareg and Islamist fighters seize control of northern Mali, declare independence
  • June 2012: Islamist groups capture towns of Timbuktu, Kidal and Gao from Tuaregs, start to destroy Muslim shrines that offend their puritan views
  • January 2013: Islamist fighters advance south, raising fears they could march on capital. Interim President Dioncounda Traore asks France for help. France intervenes, along with neighbouring countries. Northern towns recaptured
  • April 2013: France and Chad begin to withdraw
  • July 2013: State of emergency lifted. Mali troops re-enter Kidal. Deployment of a UN peace force to incorporate the West African force on the ground. Nationwide elections due

Hundreds of thousands of people in the north were displaced by fighting. The majority of them will not be able to vote.

Islamist militants in the north have also warned Muslims not to take part and have threatened to attack polling stations.

There are also concerns about the fairness of the electoral process in the northern town of Kidal, which is still occupied by Tuareg rebels.

Tuareg gunmen were suspected of abducting electoral officials in the northern Tessalit area last week as they handed out voter identification cards. The officials were later released.

French troops are still deployed in the area with Chadian forces as part of the UN stabilisation force, Minusma.

Despite the problems, Louis Michel, head of the EU's election observer mission, said he was "positively surprised" by preparations for the vote and that the conditions were acceptable.

The US ambassador to Bamako, Mary Beth Leonard, said the fragility of Mali's interim government had to end.

"A month ago, there were a lot of doubts (over the election). But it has come together," she said.

Voting is due to start at 08:00 GMT at 21,000 polling stations across the country.

Candidates include three former prime ministers, a former finance minister and one woman.

The frontrunners include Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, prime minister from 1994 to 2000, who founded his own party, the Rally for Mali (RPM), in 2001.

At his final rally in the capital Bamako on Friday, Mr Keita - known as IBK - appealed for a calm election day and vowed to ensure that "no-one will make fun of Mali again".

His biggest rival is seen as Soumaila Cisse, who founded his own party, the Union for the Republic and Democracy (URD), in 2003.

Mr Cisse has called for the junta that seized power in 2012 to be cleared from the political scene.

Observers say Soumana Sacko, another former prime minister, can expect a good showing if there is no clear winner.

Immigration forum set for Iowa congressman's turf

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Two Democratic senators say they'll hold a forum on immigration in the home district of Iowa Republican congressman Steve King to pressure him in the wake of incendiary comments he made on immigrant youths.

Sens. Tom Harkin of Iowa and Dick Durbin of Illinois say the event set for Aug. 2 in Ames will feature Iowan immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally as kids.

King has come under attack for asserting that many such youths are actually drug mules.

The event will come as Congress breaks for a five-week summer recess expected to feature events around the country aimed at pressuring House Republicans to act on immigration.

Asia?s Boxer Rebellion

Zou Shiming, the Chinese boxer with the Macau bout Saturday July 27. Zou Shiming, center

Each?Friday?Roads & Kingdoms and?Slate?publish a new dispatch from around the globe. For more foreign correspondence mixed with food, war, travel, and?photography, visit their?online magazine or follow @roadskingdoms on Twitter.

MACAU?At the podium after April?s multibout boxing extravaganza Fists of Gold at Macau?s Venetian, it?s hard to tell who just won the fight. Chinese boxing phenomenon Zou Shiming easily triumphed in his first professional match, beating a skinny 19-year-old from Mexico on points. But the biggest grin belonged to 81-year-old fight promoter Bob Arum?huge in Vegas but new to Asia?who had just taken a big swing at a far greater target: China and its 1.3 billion people.

An estimated 300 million of those Chinese watched Fists of Gold on free broadcasts across China?in addition to American viewers who watched on HBO. That made professional boxing?s first big push into China a resounding success. But as Zou prepares for his second professional fight in Fists of Gold 2 against another Mexican contender, Jesus Ortega, on Saturday, the pressure is on. Zou, and the gambling enclave that is hosting him, may be professional boxing?s last best hope. Because no matter the hype, the plight of boxing in the United States is well-known: Fans are fewer, scandals bigger, and paydays smaller. And everywhere is the sense that boxing can neither survive its reputation for brutality nor, ironically, compete with the no-holds-barred mixed martial arts craze.

But the outlook for boxing looks far different in China, in large part because of one man and one gambling enclave.

First, the man. That Zou Shiming rose to the top of this particular sport seems unlikely. His rise came, as with many Chinese sporting successes, from a combination of talent, determination, and central government planning. Boxing was actually banned under Mao Zedong?it was allowed again in 1986?and the sport only seriously became part of the country?s sporting landscape when its leaders set their sights on hosting the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

They found their champion in the 5-foot-5, 110-pound fighter from southwest China. Zou grew up the son of an engineer and kindergarten teacher who taught at the defense industry factory where his father worked in Zunyi, famous as the place where Mao was first elected to the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party. Like most of his friends, Zou turned to martial arts at a young age. But he disliked the amount of study involved. ?I was impatient, and when I found out about boxing, I knew it was the sport suited to me because I can just get in the ring and go,? says Zou, as he shifts in his seat, speaking so fast the translator asks him to slow down.

Fist Of Gold poster. Fist Of Gold poster

Speed is Zou?s hallmark in the ring, too. His lightning-fast combinations and dazzling foot speed were what first caught the attention of junior coaches in China. He won bronze at the 2004 Olympics and followed that with two world light-flyweight titles in 2005 and 2007, adding a third in 2011. His proudest moment probably came in front of the home crowd when he won gold in Beijing in 2008. Last year?s Olympics in London saw him win yet another gold medal to cap his amateur career.

He is, in many ways, the China?s ideal Olympian: successful, bankable, and unfailingly polite. He shows up to an interview before his April fight dressed in denim jeans and a leather varsity jacket zipped up to the neck, with only the flash of his golden trainers from under the table hinting at any sense of flair. He was every bit the celebrity in the week before the fight, appearing all over Macau?and across the Pearl River Delta in Hong Kong?through a series of promotional events and workouts with junior boxers, all held to the sound of the tinny techno beats of the Fists of Gold tribute song. But when he talks, it?s mostly about how much hard work he has put in since the Olympics and how much hard work he has ahead of him.

?I am learning every day,? says Zou. ?I have to learn how to avoid getting hit. Amateur fights don?t go as long, so you don?t have to worry about that as much. But this fight is a new beginning for me. I have been world champion, Olympic champion, and now I want to be a professional world champion. Ever since I was a child, I wanted to be the best in the world.?

Amazon.com posts 2Q loss, higher revenue

(AP) ? Amazon.com Inc. on Thursday reported a surprise loss in the second quarter, as higher revenue was not enough to make up for rising operating expenses. The world's largest online retailer has been spending heavily on order fulfillment and digital content rights, which continue to weigh on profit margins.

Amazon has long focused on spending the money it makes to grow its business and expand into new areas from movie streaming to e-readers and even grocery delivery. Investors have largely forgiven thin profit margins and zeroed in on the company's solid revenue growth and long-term prospects.

But such patience won't last forever. Seattle-based Amazon's stock fell $8.20, or 2.7 percent, to $295.20 in extended trading after the results came out.

BGC Financial analyst Colin Gillis said that while investors have been "rewarding Amazon for its investment cycle," the clock is ticking and Wall Street is looking to start reaping the rewards.

Amazon, which also makes the Kindle tablets and e-reader devices, lost $7 million, or 2 cents per share, in the April-June quarter. That's down from earnings of $7 million, or 1 cent per share, a year ago.

Revenue rose 22 percent to $15.7 billion.

Analysts, on average, were expecting earnings of 5 cents per share on revenue of $15.73 billion, according to a poll by FactSet.

Amazon's operating expenses rose 23 percent to $15.63 billion from $12.73 billion a year ago. Youssef Squali, an analyst at Cantor Fitzgerald, thinks that the weaker-than-expected per-share results were probably due to higher technology and content costs, "probably mostly related to Instant Prime," Amazon's video streaming service.

Like eBay Inc., Amazon saw weaker results from its international business than in the U.S., as the rocky European economy weighed on revenue growth. North American revenue grew 30 percent to $9.5 billion. International revenue, meanwhile, increased 13 percent to $6.21 billion. Jefferies analyst Brian Pitz said the North American revenue growth was "well above" his and Wall Street's expectations, while international fell short.

Paid unit growth, a closely watched figure, was 29 percent. This figure refers to the physical and digital goods that Amazon and its third-party sellers sell on its sites worldwide, excluding returns and cancellations. Pitz said he believes this was "generally in line" with Wall Street's expectations.

For the current quarter, Amazon is forecasting revenue of $15.45 billion to $17.15 billion. Analysts were expecting $16.97 billion. Pitz noted that the company "usually guides fairly conservatively."

Alibaba Pursues New Smart TV OS To Grow Its E-Commerce Play

tv remoteChinese e-commerce giant Alibaba has joined the smart TV race, unveiling a smart TV OS and set-top box today. It hopes to create its own ecosystem of TV-related assets that will give it a foot in the digital content door, letting it provide a platform for users to share content with mobile phones and other devices. The new OS will also allow users to shop and pay bills via their TVs. This is a big potential catalyst for more growth for the company; if users warm to the OS, it should pull more over to Alibaba’s e-commerce assets, which include Juhuasuan, Taobao and Tmall. They’ll also pay via Alipay, Alibaba’s payment gateway. Alibaba has been aggressively pursuing other avenues of growth for its business, and in particular finding ways to make Alipay more relevant to the growing e-commerce market in China. In January, it unveiled a mobile app for Alipay, and in April showed off a way for Beijingers to pay with their phones at vending machines using sound waves. The Chinese e-commerce market hit $120 billion in 2012, and was driven significantly by mobile users, according to the?China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC). Alibaba’s new set-top box will be called Wasu Rainbow, built by fellow Chinese company, Wasu Media Holding, which operates digital TV and IPTV networks in the country. Wasu Media was one of the first companies to obtain an Internet TV license from the government, and claims to have the largest user base in China with 8 million users. Alibaba said in a statement that other large Chinese manufacturers have agreed to incorporate its OS into their devices. These include Skyworth, Haier, Changhong. Additionally, the company has rounded up some large names in the tech and entertainment business, which include Cisco Systems?and?video-processor makers Amlogic and Allwinner. Dominant tech companies like Samsung and Apple already make smart TVs and connected set-top boxes, and as prices come down, the fight for audiences is expected to heat up as smart TVs take over living rooms. According to IHS iSuppli, smart TV shipments climbed 27 percent in 2012 to hit 66 million units. And we can expect smart TVs to cross over the halfway mark of global shipments by 2015, said the analyst firm in February. And China, in particular, appears to be a much hotter market for smart TVs compared with Western markets. According to a GfK study?published in August

Comic-Con 2013: Garfield, Foxx Share Amazing Spider-Man 2 Footage, Details

Fans slept in line overnight for the chance to see world premiere footage from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and -- judging by the cheers, screams and applause from the packed crowd in Hall H at Comic-Con International in San Diego -- their devoted efforts were well worth it.

Introducing the footage was director Marc Webb, producers Matt Tolmach and Avi Arad, and actors Andrew Garfield and Dane DeHaan. Garfield opted to enter as his big-screen alter-ego, sauntering into the crowd in full Spidey gear after a video introduction and answering questions as Spider-Man for the first ten minutes.

And he clearly had fun with the gag. He proclaimed Comic-Con "The only place I fit in," and when Emma Stone's Gwen Stacey was mentioned, he exclaimed, "She's hot!"

Stone wasn't present, but sent a video message from a location shoot in France -- as she proclaimed her excitement about the film, the video was interrupted by flashes of Jamie Foxx's Electro -- thus heralding the entrance of the actor behind the film's villain (his swagger on stage set to Kanye West's "Power.")

Taking a star-struck stance, Spidey swooned, "I loved Django!" Foxx said, quoting his Unchained character, "I like the way you die, boy." The pair continued with some light banter, until Spidey finally announced he had to leave, saying, "I'm getting the senses and stuff and I have to go to the bathroom."

Before playing the world premiere of the footage reel, Webb warned that they'd just wrapped shooting three weeks ago, so the visuals weren't finished and there were still some green screen shots and storyboards throughout.

The extended trailer emphasized the set up of Foxx's villain from nerdy, ignored Max Dillon to electricity-harnessing, all-powerful Electro. Conversely, it showed Spider-Man's fall from his comfortable perch as a fun-loving, carefree hero. The tease promised plenty of battle sequences between the two, one of which involved Electro hovering over midtown NYC shooting electricity bolts from his hands, resulting in a power outage throughout all of Times Square. Also revealed: how Dillon transformed into Electro, via a fall with a live power plug into a tank of electric eels.

On playing a villain, Foxx noted, "You don't have to color inside the lines. When I got the call about this [role] my three-year-old... she's playing on her Spider-Man jumper, she's having a Spider-Man birthday and they called and said, 'We want you to play Electro.' My daughter was like, 'Spider-Man is gonna kick your ass!'"

Foxx displayed a clear understanding of his character, delving into Dillon's back story as a lonely, unloved engineer, explaining, "What we wanted to accomplish was having him betrayed by three things: love, family and his work. We added one thing -- when you see Max, it's actually his birthday... and even his mom doesn't remember his birthday. You immediately see that he's in a hole, so when he turns into Electro it makes sense that he has so much venom and so much anger. I wanted Electro to be a serious individual who wants to burn the city down -- and burn Spider-Man along with it."

By this point, Garfield re-entered the stage sans suit, as himself. "Oh man, it's so nice to be back here! I have the fondest memories in this room from two years ago -- it's just the greatest thing!"

Of his role as Garfield's childhood friend Harry Osborn, DeHaan said, "It's really amazing. I have a lot of respect for Andrew and Marc and Jamie, and to be welcomed into this family and to bring a modern take on Harry is an awesome thing."

Garfield held court throughout the panel, graciously thanking fans, interacting with cosplayers and being the generally good-natured and enthusiastic presence that's made him a beloved figure for fans and industry professionals alike -- and he especially shined during the audience Q&A portion.

When a fan asked Garfield how he manages his swagger and hinted at the fact that he's by far the sexiest Spider-Man, Garfield good-naturedly set the record straight, saying, "You are mistaken on all accounts -- Tobey Maguire was a sex machine and still is and he will always be Spider-Man. No matter who fills those shoes, it's always going to be Tobey's role."

Another audience member brought up Garfield's recent comments about Spider-Man's sexuality, to which the actor responded eloquently, "Spider-Man stands for everybody -- black, white, Asian, gay, straight, lesbian bisexual, transsexual. I think it would be illogical and it just wouldn't make sense in the third movie suddenly I was with a black guy. [Foxx shrugs, the audience erupts into laughter] To me it's not a social issue, to me love between two consenting adults is love and no one outside of that couple has any right to judge. It's a philosophical question that I think is worth asking, and part of the beauty of Spider-Man is that he's covered head to toe -- you don't see any skin color, you don't identify him with any sexual orientation, he is a hero and that's what's important."

A high school student took the mic to ask Garfield how he juggles acting with his personal life, lamenting that he's an aspiring actor who just failed chemistry class because he couldn't strike the right balance. "You want to be an actor -- why are you caring about chemistry?" Garfield responded, to wild hoots and laughter from the crowd. Garfield went on to embody his inspiring big-screen character, imploring the young man to follow his dreams and passions no matter what.

DeHaan shed some light on Harry Osborn's situation in this film, saying, "In this version, Harry and Peter are childhood friends and Harry gets sent off to boarding school... he cuts off pretty much everything that had to do with his life... then they graduate high school and it's time for him to come home and he has to reconcile his relationship with Peter for the first time in a really long time."

Webb added, "With Peter Parker, you never really see him have a true friendship... it really does complicate his life in a significant way in the film.... there's so much spectacle in this movie... but the basis of it is these very real understandable relationships. The intimacy of those relationships is what all the spectacle is built on."

A brave fan confronted Webb about the fact that The Rhino, Electro and Harry Osborn are all being introduced in this film, asking, "Do you feel like you're putting in too much?"

Webb was adamant in his response: "It's just the right abount of stuff." He then expanded, shining a light on Paul Giamatti's smaller-than-expected role, "The main villain in this movie is Electro. Paul Giamiatti makes an appearance in a few scenes... that was to establish sort of a fun tone." He described Electro as "an incredibly powerful villain" and called him "god-like" before posing the question, "How does Spider-Man fight someone who, if you touch him, its like touching a thousand third rails?"

And the panel ended with nearly as big a bang as it opened when, asked to name his ideal Spider-Man storyline for a future movie, Garfield responded, "I'd like to see him with The Avengers." Judging by the reaction of the crowd, he's not alone.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hits theaters on May 2, 2014.

High school coach arrested on 10 charges

Bradenton, Florida -- An assistant high school football coach accused of inappropriate behavior with a student has been arrested.

Rod Frazier is charged with seven counts of battery, and three counts of interference with the attendance of a school pupil in a school or classroom. All 10 charges are misdemeanors.

A Manatee High School student claims Frazier improperly touched her, and once asked her for a naked picture. ?

"When I would leave and give him a hug, he would grab my butt and he
would pick me up by my butt," the now 18-year-old previously told 10 News.

The girl also said Frazier would regularly pull her out of class to
spend time in his office, and he would constantly call and text her and
tell her he loved her.

Frazier has been on paid leave from the Manatee County School District since February 8?after it was revealed Bradenton Police were investigating the coach.?

Frazier's attorney tells 10 News his client will enter a not guilty plea to all charges.

"This is a simple battery and out of all this... we're dealing with misdemeanors," says attorney Ed Mulock.?Based on the publicity of this case, he says "You would think he was a murderer, a rapist or he had sex with a minor."?

Mullock adds, "It's just astonishing to me that we're going to see this in misdemeanor court."

What Games Are: The Culture Gap In Mobile Games

candyWhile other formats gain huge swathes of coverage in the gaming press, the talk in mobile is almost always just about process, business models and money. The absence of a cultural layer is notable, and a potential gap is emerging for someone to become a critical influencer in that market. What might that look like?

(AP) ? Police have yet to release a motive behind the fatal killings of two women and the serious wounding of a man at a shopping center in a trendy San Francisco neighborhood.

A bloodied gunman suspected in the killings was arrested after opening fire on officers Friday afternoon.

Officers encountered the suspect outside the San Francisco GiftCenter and JewelryMart who began shooting at officers while running toward a restaurant. He surrendered after apparently running out of ammunition.

Inside, officers found the women inside the Victoga jewelry shop dead and the man wounded. Witnesses say the women were employees and the man is the owner.

Police Chief Greg Suhr said police didn't know the relationship between the suspect and the victims even though he had previously been seen in the building.

First 3 gorings in Spain's San Fermin bull runs

PAMPLONA, Spain (AP) ? An American and two Spaniards were gored Friday during a danger-filled sixth bull run of Spain's San Fermin festival, with one loose bull causing panic in the packed streets of the city of Pamplona.

Tension soared when one of the animals charged a man and tossed him on the ground with its horns for almost 30 seconds as fellow runners tried to pull it away by its tail. The man clung to one of the horns as screams were heard all around.

Helpers eventually dragged the victim to safety by his feet. The local Diario de Navarra newspaper said the man was from Morella, Spain, but this could not be immediately confirmed.

The regional government of Navarra said one American and two Spaniards were gored in the run while another American and two Spaniards were also taken to city hospitals for other injuries suffered in falls and trampling during the frenzied event.

The government press office identified the American gored only by his initials ? P.E. ? and gave his age as 20.

Navarra Hospital chief Javier Sesma said doctors removed the American's spleen after it was found that the bull's horn had gone through the abdominal cavity and punctured the non-vital, blood-filtering organ. He said the young man was in stable condition.

Sesma said the Spaniard that had been pinned to the ground was gored three times; in the groin, knee and thigh.

"The injuries are not as serious as one would have expected on seeing the televised footage," said Sesma.

None of the six taken to the hospital was said to be in serious condition.

Hospital authorities initially said four people were gored but the regional government revised that down to three.

The gorings were the first of this year's runs, during which thousands of thrill-seekers race daily with the bulls along a 930-yard (850-meter) route from a holding pen to the city bull ring.

Friday's event lasted just under five minutes, roughly double the normal length. Longer runs normally occur when some of the bulls get separated from the pack and become disoriented and more dangerous.

The black bull which caused most panic Friday made several more attempts to charge people before he was eventually guided along the narrow streets to join the rest for the pack in the pen of the packed bull ring.

The nationally televised 8 a.m. runs are the highlight of the nine-day street partying festival made world famous with the 1926 publication of Ernest Hemingway's novel "The Sun Also Rises."

The bulls that take part each morning are invariably killed by matadors in evening bull fights, and their meat is served up in Pamplona's restaurants.

Dozens of people are injured each year in the "encierros," as the runs are called in Spanish. Most get hurt after tripping and falling in the rush.

The fighting bulls used in the centuries-old fiesta can weigh up to at 1,380 pounds (625 kilograms) and have killed 15 people since record-keeping began in 1924.

Murder charge to be filed in death of Calif boy

The 16-year-old half-brother of an 11-year-old boy found dead earlier this week in Southern California will be charged with one count of murder, prosecutors said Friday.

The suspect was expected to make a first court appearance on Monday in juvenile court in the death of 11-year-old Terry Dewayne Smith Jr., whose disappearance Sunday led hundreds of volunteers to search for four days in triple-digit heat.

On Wednesday, authorities announced they had found a body matching the description of Terry Jr. in a shallow grave under a tree behind the house he shared with his mother, half-brother and other family members.

Riverside County prosecutors have also asked for a court hearing to determine whether the half-brother should be tried as an adult, said John Hall, a spokesman for the district attorney's office.

The Associated Press is not naming the suspect because he is a juvenile.

Initial reports from the mother, relayed by law enforcement, described Terry Jr. as an autistic boy who took special medication and answered only to his nickname, "JuJu."

His father, however, insisted that his son was not autistic.

The boy lived with him until 2011, when he went to live with his mother, and was a normal kid who loved video games and baseball, said Terry Dewayne Smith Sr., a 62-year-old retired truck driver living in Charleston, W. Va.

"He was a very bright, well-adjusted child, at least he was when he left here," said Smith Sr. "He pushed buttons and would aggravate you. But, other than that, it was just the typical way ... of a typical boy trying to get his way."

Smith Sr. also helped raise the half-brother accused in the case, he said. The teen moved from West Virginia to California after his mother abruptly pulled him out of school, he said.

"I taught him how to walk. I helped him when he was on the baseball team here," he said, recalling that he called the half-brother "little Spider-Man."

A phone listing for the boy's mother, Shawna Smith, was disconnected. Messages left at a second number associated with her address were not returned.

Investigators told Smith Sr. that Terry Jr. died after a hit to the head but declined to say more, citing a request from police who are still working the case.

Hundreds of volunteers searched for Terry Jr. for more than three days in abandoned trailers and campsites tucked into the scrubby hillsides of rural Riverside County, where horse ranches dot the landscape and large stretches of land remain undeveloped. Sheriff's deputies fanned out on horseback and with bloodhounds in the triple-digit heat and helicopters buzzed overhead, searching for clues.

A detective involved in the search gave credit for the discovery of the body to a volunteer woman who said she had a vision of where to find Terry.

Detective John Powers told KFI-AM radio on Thursday that Pam Ragland and her children came to the property where investigators, including him, had searched thoroughly already and found the body immediately.

"She actually went right up the driveway of the house, on to the property, and right up to the body of this boy," Powers said. "Not in 23 years have I ever seen anything like this."

George Zimmerman trial: Jury can consider lesser charge of manslaughter

The judge in the George Zimmerman murder trial will give the jury the option of convicting him of a lesser charge, despite objections from the defense. Some legal analysts say prosecutors were not confident of their case for second-degree murder in the Trayvon Martin shooting.

By Patrik Jonsson,?Staff Writer / July 11, 2013

Judge Debra Nelson gives instructions to attorneys during George Zimmerman's trial in Seminole circuit court in Sanford, Fla., Thursday. Mr. Zimmerman has been charged with second-degree murder for the 2012 shooting death of Trayvon Martin, but the judge said she will instruct jurors that they can also consider the lesser charge of manslaughter.

After three weeks of testimony ranging from wrenching to bizarre, Seminole County Court Judge Debra Nelson agreed to allow a six-woman jury in the George Zimmerman murder trial to consider convicting Mr. Zimmerman of manslaughter, a lesser charge than the initial second-degree murder charge.

"The court will give the instruction on manslaughter as a Category One," Judge Nelson said, in a significant development on Thursday.

While it?s not unusual for prosecutors to try to hedge their bets, some criminal justice experts say the move indicates that the state has doubts that the jury would find that Zimmerman shot Trayvon Martin, an unarmed teenager, out of ill will or spite, the foundation of a second-degree murder conviction.

The prosecution isn?t ?blind to the fact that they haven?t proven second-degree murder,? Florida defense attorney Jose Baez, who successfully defended Casey Anthony against capital murder charges for allegedly killing her own daughter, told USA Today.

A second-degree murder conviction could mean life in prison for the 29-year-old former neighborhood watch captain. A manslaughter charge in Florida carries up to 30 years in state prison.

The jury will return to Seminole County Court in Sanford, Fla., at 1 p.m. to begin to hear closing arguments.

The trial has captivated much of the nation, being the closing chapter of a parable about racial stereotyping, gun rights, and societal crime fears. Trayvon, who'd had some trouble in school but had never been arrested, was returning from a convenience store with candy and a drink when he, according to testimony, told a friend on the phone, Rachel Jeantel, that a ?creepy, white, kill-my-neighbors cracker" was following him.

The shooting sparked massive protests after Sanford, Fla., police refused to arrest Zimmerman, saying his self-defense claim couldn?t be countered. The racial specter that still hangs over the case is the question of whether police ? and society ? would have reacted the same way had an armed black man pursued a white teenager, and then shot him dead after a fight.

Antitrust watchdog raids top European telecoms firms

By Foo Yun Chee and Leila Abboud

BRUSSELS/PARIS (Reuters) - Europe's competition watchdog is investigating some of the region's biggest telecoms firms over whether they abused their market position in deals with Internet companies to deliver content to consumers.

Offices of Deutsche Telekom , France's Orange SA and Spain's Telefonica were searched by antitrust regulators after a complaint by a U.S.-based competitor, two people familiar with the matter said on Thursday.

The amount that telecom operators charge for delivering content has become a sore point with some Internet companies. In the past, delivery was free. But with data traffic from streaming video and other downloads booming, operators argue that the Internet companies should pay more.

U.S.-based Cogent Communications - a middleman, or transit provider, that carries global traffic on behalf of Internet companies that want to reach consumers - has filed similar complaints against several European telecom operators in recent years.

Two people close to the situation said that the current Brussels inquiry was also related to the issues raised by Cogent.

The EU Commission said on Thursday it raided the offices of some telecoms providers in several countries on July 9 but did not identify the companies nor its specific objective, in line with its usual policy.

"The Commission has concerns that the companies concerned may have violated EU antitrust rules that prohibit the abuse of a dominant market position," the EU executive said in a statement.

"Internet connectivity ... is crucial for the functioning of the Internet and for end users' ability to reach Internet content with the necessary quality of service, irrespective of the location of the provider," it said.

Deutsche Telekom and Orange SA confirmed the raid. A source familiar with the issue said Telefonica was also raided and that only three companies were targeted. Telefonica declined to comment.

KPN and Belgacom said they were not raided. Nor was Telecom Italia , a person familiar with the case said.

Companies can be fined as much as 10 percent of their global turnover for breaching EU antitrust rules.

In France, competition regulators examined a complaint by Cogent that Orange was overcharging it to deliver content to Orange customers there. In September 2012, the French watchdog sided with Orange, saying the operator could legally ask Cogent for more money to compensate for the high level of traffic it was delivering.

German regulators also examined and dismissed a similar case involving Cogent, said a person familiar with the matter.

The European telecom index <.sxkp> was up 0.2 percent at 1152 GMT. Orange shares were up 1.9 percent, Telefonica 0.9 percent, and Deutsche Telekom up 0.9 percent.

HTC One Google Play edition spotted with Android 4.3

The Google Play edition of HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4 was announced some time back. And now HTC One Google Play edition with Android 4.3 has been spotted in the logs of Bluetooth SIG (Bluetooth Special Interest Group).

The Bluetooth SIG is the body that manages Bluetooth standards in the handsets and gives licenses for Bluetooth technologies to handset manufacturers.

HTC One

What makes Google Play important is the fact that these phones will be the first to get new Android editions as and when they are launched by Google. They will also come with stock Android without any modification by manufacturers. For instance, HTC handsets come with Sense user interface while Samsung devices come with Touchwiz user interface.

Google is yet to announce the next generation Android operating system. However, according to rumors, Google could unveil the next version of Android as well as a possible facelift of Google Nexus 7 tablet by the end of July. It is also not clear if Android 4.3 will be called Key Lime Pie, or whether there will be Android 5.0 instead.

Matthew Henderson receives 2013 Google PhD Fellowship

Matthew's research is in the spoken language side of Artificial Intelligence, looking at the challenging problem for a computer of maintaining a natural conversation with a person. Using probability theory, statistics and modern machine learning, he hopes to improve the performance and extend the scope of dialog systems. This topic is relevant to Google as its voice search is becoming ever more popular, and it releases its new 'conversational search' interface. After completing a BA in Mathematics at Cambridge, Matthew obtained an MSc in Speech and Language Processing at the University of Edinburgh. Now he is working for a PhD in Cambridge under the supervision of Steve Young in the Department's Dialogue Systems Group. Google will provide generous funding for the rest of Matthew's PhD, pair him with a Mentor working at Google, and encourage him to do an internship with them, which he plans to do next summer. Google don't impose any restrictions on the research of the recipient.

As Google welcome the newest class of PhD Fellows, they take a look back at the programme?s roots and hear from two past recipients.

In 2009, Google launched its PhD Fellowship Programme, created to recognize and support outstanding graduate students pursuing work in computer science, related disciplines or promising research areas. In its inaugural year, 13 United States PhD students were awarded fellowships, drawn from an extremely competitive pool of applicants. The global programme now covers Europe, China, India and Australia and continues to draw some of the best young researchers, reflecting Google?s commitment to building strong relations with the academic community.

Among those first recipients of the fellowship award are 2009 PhD Fellow Roxana Geambasu, Visiting Professor in the Computer Science Department at Columbia University, and 2010 European Doctoral Fellow Roland Angst, Visiting Assistant Professor at Stanford University and affiliated with the Max Planck Center for Visual Computing and Communication. As early recipients of the award, Roxana and Roland reflect on the impact that the Google Fellowship programme had on their careers.

For Roxana, the fellowship provided the tools and connections that helped lay the foundation for her academic career. She believes industrial fellowship programmes are very important, as they give students an opportunity to interact more closely with industry.

?Beyond the financial support, I think that the fellowship impacted my career in many important ways. First, the Google fellowships are regarded as highly competitive, so receiving the award was probably a big plus on my resume when I was interviewing for faculty positions.?

?Second, the award yielded a mentor within Google, Brad Chen, with whom I've kept in touch ever since, as well as opportunities to visit the campus, deliver talks and meet Google engineers. Brad and I continue to meet at conferences and discuss my work, his work and (of late) the work of my students; it?s through that relationship I?m exposed to new people from Google and gain valuable advice about faculty award opportunities.?

Roland Angst credits the award with the ability to lighten his teaching load and instead focus on his research, which ultimately prepared him for his future academic career. Like Roxanna, Roland states that the fellowship also gave him the opportunity to establish connections with people working in related topics in industry.

?In my view, programmes such as the Google Fellowship Awards represent an important and integral link between industry and universities. Firstly, such programmes increase the awareness in the academic world for relevant problems in industry. Secondly, these programmes allow the IT industry to express their gratitude to the educational services provided by the universities on which the IT industry heavily relies."

Samsung buys Boxee, shuts down cloud DVR service

cloud

July 5, 2013 at 2:38 PM ET

The Boxee cloud DVR and box were to be tightly linked.

Boxee

The Boxee cloud DVR and box were to be tightly linked.

After six years, Internet streaming service and set-top box company Boxee will be closing up shop as a result of its purchase by Samsung, announced July 3. The Korean tech giant essentially bought Boxee's talent and ideas to help improve its smart TVs and will not keep the company itself in business.

On July 4, Boxee announced that it will close down its cloud DVR service, which allowed people to record TV programs online, giving them less than a week to binge-watch whatever they had saved.

But customers won't be left out in the cold, company spokesperson Andrew Kippen told us in an email. While the Boxee Cloud DVR set-top box and the older Boxee Box device will no longer connect to a Boxee service, it seems that the company will make sure it has access to other online video and music services that were included, such as Pandora, MLB.TV, and the obligatory Netflix. [See also: 5 Steps to Cut Cable and Enjoy TV for Half the Price]

"We're working behind the scenes to ensure there's minimal impact to people's devices. Apart from the Cloud DVR shutting down, we expect minimal changes," Kippen wrote to us.

Boxee planned to offer both a free and paid DVR service (for $10 per month). Both were to have unlimited recording, but the free service had restrictions on how long recordings would be available and how many hours people could watch per month. But the program was still in beta and had so far been offered for free, so no one lost any money on subscription services. "We've never charged for Cloud DVR," said Kippen. (TV-over-the-Internet service Aereo, in comparison, charges customers $8 per month to record 20 hours online and $12 for 60 hours.)

But with Boxee's $99 set-top box so integrated with a now-defunct online service, customers aren't exactly getting what they paid for. " We will honor our 90 day return policy for people who bought off our website," said Kippen. The devices were also sold in retail and would presumably be subject to those stores' return policies.

EARLY EDUCATION ADVOCATE DIES: Dr. Ramona Paul ? pictured here with schoolchildren from Edmond, OK in 2009 ? was one of the nation?s best known advocates of early childhood education. She passed away this week. Photo by John Jernigan, Oklahoma Today

By Patrick B. McGuigan | CapitolBeatOK

OKLAHOMA CITY ? Ramona Paul, former assistant superintendent of public instruction and the leading advocate for expansion of early childhood education in the Sooner State, died last weekend.

According to a press release from the state Department of Education, Dr. Paul suffered a heart attack while on vacation in Idaho. News of her passing moved quickly around education circles and among state policy leaders this week.

With a couple of brief stops elsewhere, Paul worked at the state Department of Education from 1988 until her retirement in 2011. Her advocacy of expanded early childhood education made her a national figure; the state was applauded for its policy developments over the decades of her public service. Rutgers University analysts and others touted as models the programs she pioneered during her work at the agency.

She served as a faculty member at Oklahoma State University, Texas Women?s University in Denton, the University of Alabama, and Purdue University. Dr. Paul earned her Ph.D. from Purdue and was also a graduate assistant during her time at Iowa State University.

In 2009, she was named Oklahoman of the Year by Oklahoma Today magazine. She was the first educator and first state government employee to earn that designation. In an interview with CapitolBeatOK, former Superintendent Sandy Garrett said Dr. Paul ?was like a sister to me, and an invaluable member of our team at the Department of Education for many years.?

Randy Krehbiel of The Tulsa World wrote a lengthy feature profile story in the January/February 2010 edition of Oklahoma Today.

Then-editor?Louisa McCune-Elmore commented, ?To say that she has created a better future for Oklahoma is an understatement, and we believe telling her story is a step toward creating the best schools in our nation.?

Dr. Paul was closely allied with former Superintendent Garrett, and often credited Gov. Brad Henry and his wife Kim for their support of her work. Tulsa businessman and philanthropist George Kaiser provided private support for expansion of the early childhood education models she supported.

State Rep. Joe Dorman, D-Rush Springs, commented on her death in a statement sent to CapitolBeatOK: ?Dr. Ramona Paul was widely recognized as the leader in early childhood reforms for Oklahoma and is one of the key reasons our state has one of the top ranks in the United States for early childhood education. Her efforts and compassion for students were key components to the many successes we have seen in recent years with these programs.

?Ramona was a good friend to many educators and policymakers and will be greatly missed. I send my condolences to her husband and other family members.?

Superintendent of Public Instruction Janet Barresi, in a statement from her office, commented, ?I was deeply saddened to hear of the death of Dr. Paul. She is the pioneer who made early childhood education possible for the state of Oklahoma. We want to recognize all of her tremendous contributions to the profession and to students and families throughout our state.?

The mother of three sons (Steven, Stuart and Jerry), Dr. Ramona Paul also had four stepchildren with her husband of many years, Homer.

Dr. Paul?s services will be held next Tuesday (July 9) at Oklahoma City?s Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Cops: 'High-risk' arrest nets suspect with stolen weapons, Molotov cocktails, body armor

A Nevada man was arrested in Seattle, where local police found him in a stolen truck filled with weapons, body armor and what appeared to be bombs.

By M. Alex Johnson, Staff Writer, NBC News

The FBI and Seattle authorities were investigating a Nevada man who was arrested after he was spotted on the University of Washington campus in a stolen truck carrying multiple explosive devices, stolen firearms and body armor, police said Thursday.

The man was arrested a few blocks away after a police pursuit near Seattle Children's Hospital late Wednesday, said John Vinson, chief of the University of Washington police. He gave no further details of the pursuit, but he described the arrest as "high-risk."

Justin Miles Jasper was arrested early Thursday and was being held without bail in the King County jail on suspicion of possessing an incendiary device.?Jail?records gave no age or hometown for Jasper, but Vinson said the suspect was 21 years old and from Nevada.

Vinson said investigators "have no idea what his intentions are."

Campus police first encountered the man Tuesday when they found him sleeping in the truck, Vinson said. A records check turned up empty, so the man was sent on his way.

Wednesday morning, the truck showed up as having been stolen in Montana, police said, and when it was spotted on campus about 10:30 p.m. (1:30 a.m. Thursday ET ), officers gave pursuit.

The man was arrested at an address that is a few hundred yards from Seattle Children's Hospital, police said. Inside the truck, investigators found a stolen rifle with a scope attachment, a stolen shotgun, body armor and multiple incendiary devices, which police described as "very well made" Molotov cocktails.

Asked how many devices were in the truck, Vinson said, "Multiple ... (but) less than 10."

Authorities said they believed there was no longer any threat to the university community, but they said the FBI had joined what they called a "very active criminal investigation."
