Netizen holdings inaugurates speeed.com for automotive and motor ...

This partnership was completed after the transformation of the previously named Arabmotors.tv into Speeed.com, to better align the partnership's expertise in the world of internet, development and investment to match with the newly redesigned and improved changes introduced through the website's services.

This transformation has reached the content, interface, design, interaction, and ease of surfing.

Speeed.com is considered the first of its kind in covering news and updates for the huge spread of the automotive and motor sports sector.

The launching has resulted from the uplifting of the old Arabmotors.tv in line with the growing audience needs for a specialty hub that gathers local and global contents in Arabic, in addition to providing world-class service and quality of interactive content through videos, photos and other services that best accommodate the readers' ambitions.

The agreement ceremony held at Netizen offices in Dubai was signed by Mr. Khaled Al Dosari; CEO of Netizen WLL and founder of kooora.com the international sports' website, and Mr. Mousub Shashaa; GM of Arabmotors.tv.

The agreement unveiled a strategic website refresh and further supported the takeoff for Speeed.com with the company's expertise and technical capabilities. Netizen WLL is considered one of the leading names in the world of investment within the internet sector, content development, telecommunications and mobile phones, e-commerce, social networking, games and entertainment, mobile phone applications and global forums.

Netizen also has ownership of one of the largest global sports websites; kooora.com, in addition to virtual football game "Fantasy Football" and Goalzz.com. Kooora.com is one of the top sources for information and news concerning the sports field in the Arab world.

It not only features rare photos and videos for various sports' activities, it also gives a comprehensive media coverage for key sporting events for all its users. Kooora.com offers a complete database of information and records related to football teams and famous players, with a range of over one billion logins per month in the Arab world.

"The launching of Speeed.com is a product of our extensive research for what the public needs through the internet, those researches have clearly resulted in favor of the automotive and motors' global news and updates," said Mr. Khaled AlDosari, CEO of Netizen.

"Therefore, based on the distinctive success of Arabmotors.tv and its remarkable login figures and reputation, a partnership and collaboration with Netizen was instantly proposed in order to launch Speeed.com. We will build a massive fans and visitors' base for this new website through the largest youth platform for sports in the Arab world," he added.

"We anticipate a significant success for Speeed.com, especially with all the expertise put in it in such a short period of time. God willing, the website will reach the target group as soon as possible and will achieve the results we aspire. Add to that our constant belief to continuously offer the best for our visitors using contemporary methods and techniques," AlDosari concluded.

Mr. Mousub Shashaa, GM of Speeed.com (previously Arabmotors.tv) added, "We are pleased with this collaboration; the launching of Speeed.com in partnership with Netizen is in fact a great beginning and a proof of the successes that Arabmotors.tv has accomplished in line with our vision in order to reach to the transformation into Speeed.com."

"My team all over the Arab Gulf area will commit to guarantee a full comprehensive coverage for all automotive events including motor shows, launches, or any related sporting events," Mr. Shashaa added, "In addition to recruiting onsite reporters and specialists, with an experience exceeding three years in media coverage and automotive field, in order to deliver news and reports of all current events for our audience at Speeed.com," he concluded.

Furthermore, Arabmotors.tv is a specialized automotive company, founded in 2009 and started its journey as a TV channel specialized in media coverage then transformed into a large leading website with large-scale social platforms that met the exact needs of its audience at the time and delivered news and reports in record timing. Arabmotors.tv has reached up to 350,000 followers on Twitter, Facebook and Google+, in addition to more than 10 million viewers on YouTube.

How milk banks work - The Orange County Register

Milk banks, like blood banks, provide to those most in need. They also rely on volunteers, test their supplies and can experience shortages.

Q. Who needs donated milk?

A. Premature babies are the biggest consumers of pasteurized breast milk. Most insurance companies will cover the cost of banked milk if it is medically necessary, according to the nonprofit Mothers Milk Bank in San Jose.

Q. Are donors paid?

A. No. Most milk banks are nonprofits and rely on donations, just like for blood or organs.

Q. How much does milk cost?

A. Children's Hospital of Orange County pays $3 per ounce and buys about 4,500 to 5,000 ounces from Mothers Milk Bank per year, said Caroline Steele, director of clinical nutrition and lactation services.

Q. What does it take to become a donor?

A. Mothers must fill out health questionnaires and undergo a blood test before beginning to donate.

Q. What happens to the milk?

A. The milk from several donors is pooled after thawing, and then heat-treated to kill any bacteria or viruses, according to the Human Milk Banking Association of North America. The milk is processed and then refrozen. It is only dispensed after a sample is cultured and shows no bacteria growth.

Q. Does pasteurization change the nutritional value of breast milk?

A. A little bit. "It makes some slight changes, but really the majority of both the nutritional and anti-infective properties of milk are all maintained, even with the pasteurization process. It's definitely second to mom's own milk," Steele said.

Q. Is there a typical donor?

A. It varies. "There are moms who work full time who are pumping while they're at work," said Loren Kosmont, a spokeswoman for Prolacta, which is affiliated with South Coast Milk Bank in Irvine. "There are stay-at-home moms who are pumping and they have extra. It really comes down to if that mom has surplus milk and she knows she can do something with it. It's really painful to have to pour that liquid gold down the drain."

Self help books and websites can benefit severely depressed patients

Feb. 26, 2013 ? Patients with severe depression show at least as good clinical benefit from 'low-intensity' interventions, such as self help books and interactive websites, as less severely ill patients, according to new research by The University of Manchester.

Depression is a major cause of disability worldwide and effective management of this is a key challenge for health care systems.

The study, funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), confirmed evidence that 'low-intensity' interventions provide significant clinical benefit. Initial severity of depression is one of the key variables determining who gets 'low' or 'high' intensity treatment, but this is largely based on epidemiological studies and clinical experience rather than high quality evidence.

Researchers from an international collaboration carrid out a meta-analysis of several studies involving 2470 patients with depression, all treated in a non-hospital setting. All studies were from the year 2000 or later with a sample size of more than 50 patients. The mean age in all studies was 35-45, and studies included patients with lower levels of depressive symptoms, as well as those with quite severe depression.

'Low-intensity' treatment was defined as interventions designed to help patients manage depressive symptoms such as self-help books or interactive websites, often with limited guidance and support from a health professional. Self-help groups were excluded.

The researchers found that patients with more severe depression at baseline derive "at least as good clinical benefit from 'low-intensity' interventions as less severely ill patients." They recommend including 'low-intensity' interventions in the first step of treating severely ill patients and encouraging the majority of patients to use them as the initial treatment option.

Professor Peter Bower, from The University of Manchester who led the research, said: "To better manage depression in the community, many services seek to provide simple forms of psychological therapy (so called 'low intensity' interventions) to depressed patients. We assessed whether more severely ill patients demonstrated better or worse treatment effects from 'low-intensity' treatments. We found no clinically meaningful differences in treatment effects between more and less severely ill patients receiving 'low-intensity' interventions. Patients with more severe depression can be offered 'low-intensity' treatments as part of a stepped care model."

The researchers also say that an important research question for the future is whether low-intensity treatments are cost-effective and if "initial experience with low intensity interventions could act as a barrier to further treatment."

Passbook ticketing available in 13 MLB stadiums this season

Passbook ticketing available in 13 MLB stadiums this season

Major League Baseball and Apple's quest to banish paper ticketing received a boost last night after the former revealed that 13 stadiums would offer the latter's Passbook integration this season. Seven teams, including the Oakland A's, Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins are signed up, with a further three to be announced separately. How long will it take before the duo hit it out of the park and get a grand slam of all 30 MLB teams? Hopefully long enough for us to learn some more baseball slang.

Republican Congressman Faces Tea Party Wrath for Flying Air Force One

In just over two years in Congress, Republican Scott Rigell of Virginia has piqued conservatives by voting to raise the debt ceiling, disavowing an anti-tax pledge, and partnering with Democrats on gun control legislation. He was one of only two Republicans last year to oppose holding Attorney General Eric Holder in criminal contempt.

But the proverbial straw broke the tea party?s back on Wednesday, when Rigell joined President Obama at a major shipbuilder near his southeastern Virginia district that would be hurt by sweeping military cuts if Congress doesn?t reach a budget deal. President Obama, who called for reducing the deficit in part by raising taxes, thanked Rigell and Democratic Rep. Bobby Scott, whose district includes Newport News Shipbuilding, as ?two outstanding congressmen who care about this facility, care about Virginia and care about this country.?

Rigell did not appear on stage with the president, but to some conservative activists, his attendance amounted to a betrayal.

?There?s going to be a lot of discussion about Congressman Rigell and I think it?s much more likely he will face a primary challenge next year,? said Karen Miner Hurd, founder of the Hampton Roads Tea Party. ?He, like many Republicans, are turning their backs on what got them elected in the first place.?

Grover Norquist, the national anti-tax crusader whose pledge Rigell no longer supports, called him out on Twitter as a ?very cheap date? for flying with the president on Air Force One to the event. ??He?s being used by the White House as a prop for tax increases,? Norquist said in a telephone interview.

For Rigell, one of only seven Republicans representing districts carried twice by President Obama, the backlash shows the challenge of trying to straddle the divide coursing through the GOP since the November election. While the tea party movement that swept Rigell and historic numbers of Republicans into office in 2010 is trying to hold the line on taxes, the Republican establishment is increasingly calling for less ideological approach to governing,

In an interview with National Journal after the event with the president, Rigell said that he viewed the White House?s invitation as an opportunity to make a case against the so-called sequester on behalf of his district, which is home to more active and military personnel than any other in the country.

?If I have the opportunity to look the president in the eye in his role as commander-in-chief?my responsibilities to my district compel me to do so,? Rigell said. ?I didn?t accept the trip to get on Air Force One, and it?s not an endorsement of his plan. It was [an] opportunity to meet with president and show bipartisan support for the hardworking men and women of Newport News Shipbuilding.?

Rigell said he asked the president to offer alternative spending cuts and has been ?disappointed? in his failure to do so. He also faulted his Republican colleagues for refusing any compromise that would include ?even one dollar? of new revenue. ?That is not a wise position,? he said. ?How in the world can I face someone who works at Newport News Shipbuilding and rises at 5 a.m. with their lunchbox thinking they could be laid off and military readiness affected because of the dysfunction of this place??

A new national survey by the Pew Research Center supports Rigell?s concerns that his party needs to rethink its approach to the budget and other issues. The poll found that 62% of the public sees the GOP as out of touch with the American people. Majorities also view the party as not open to change and too extreme.

The party?s shift rightward was one reason Steve LaTourette of Ohio -- the other Republican who sided with Rigell on the Holder vote -- left public office this year and took over a centrist group called the Main Street Partnership.

?I really admire Congressman Rigell because he?s willing to actually think about issues and respond in a thoughtful way, rather than the party line or a kneejerk way,? LaTourette said. ?These votes are not popular with core members of the Republican base and it?s a fine line he has to walk.?

Virginia?s Second Congressional District is a particularly competitive battleground at a time when gerrymandering and partisan self-sorting have reduced the number of swing districts. It was represented throughout the 1990s by Owen Pickett, a Blue Dog Democrat known for working with Republicans to protect defense spending. The district swung back and forth over the following decade between the two parties. In 2010, Rigell was a successful car dealer and big Republican donor who had never run for office before. He won a crowded Republican primary with an endorsement from Gov. Bob McDonnell and went on to defeat Democrat Glenn Nye, elected just two years earlier in the Democratic wave that swept Barack Obama into the White House.

Rigell has backed the scaled-down budget promoted by House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan and opposed the fiscal cliff deal sealed on New Year?s Day. But he crossed party leaders by voting to raise the debt ceiling, calling it the ?best path forward with the options that we?re given here.?

In another attempt at nuance, Rigell opposes President Obama?s health care law but his staff says he stopped calling it ?Obamacare? after a black pastor complained it was a pejorative term.

Scott, 52, has had relative success in appealing to African Americans, who make up about 20 percent of his district. His campaign estimated that he received 13 percent of the African American vote, more than twice as much as Republican nominee Mitt Romney in 2012.

Rigell is a co-founder of the Fix Congress Now Caucus, a congressional reform group that backed the ?No Budget, No Pay? proposal to force members to pass a budget or forego a paycheck. Rigell has declined federal health care and pension benefits and, his website says, ?will return more than $100,000 of his consecutive two-year salaries back to the U.S. Treasury.??

In February, Rigell wrote an open letter to his constituents saying that he would not renew his commitment to the anti-tax pledge. He argued that by precluding closing corporate loopholes and ending government subsidies, the pledge would allow the national debt to continue to escalate. ?In practice," he said, "the pledge can work against the very goal we seek to advance."

Budweiser waters down its beer, lawsuit alleges

Beer lovers across the country have filed $5 million class-action lawsuits accusing Anheuser-Busch of watering down its Budweiser, Michelob and other brands.

The suits were filed in Pennsylvania, California and other states on behalf of consumers allegedly cheated out of the beverage's stated alcohol content. Budweiser and Michelob each boast being 5 percent alcohol, while some "light" versions are said to be just over 4 percent.

Lead lawyer Josh Boxer of San Rafael, Calif., said Tuesday the suits are based on information from former employees at some of the company's 13 U.S. breweries. Boxer said water is added just before bottling, and cuts the stated alcohol content by 3 to 8 percent.

The claims against Anheuser-Busch are ?completely false,? Peter Kraemer, the company?s vice president of brewing and supply, said in an e-mail to Bloomberg.com.

?Our beers are in full compliance with all alcohol labeling laws,? Kraemer said. ?We proudly adhere to the highest standards in brewing our beers, which have made them the best-selling in the U.S. and the world.?

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Mediterranean diet helps cut risk of heart attack, stroke: Results of PREDIMED study presented

Feb. 25, 2013 ? Results of the PREDIMED study, aimed at assessing the efficacy of the Mediterranean diet in the primary prevention of cardiovascular diseases, have been published in The New England Journal of Medicine. They show that the Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil or tree nuts reduces by 30 percent the risk of suffering a cardiovascular death, a myocardial infarction or a stroke.

The study has been coordinated by the researcher Ramon Estruch, from the Faculty of Medicine of the UB and the Hospital Cl?nic -- affiliated centres with the health campus of the UB, HUBc -- and has had the collaboration of the professor Rosa M. Lamuela and her team from the Natural Antioxidant Research Group of the Faculty of Pharmacy -- located at the campus of international excellence BKC -- which determined the biomarkers of Mediterranean diet consumption.

The research is part of the project PREDIMED, a multicentre trial carried out between 2003 and 2011 to study the effects of the Mediterranean diet on the primary prevention of cardiovascular diseases. The study was funded by the Carlos III Health Institute by means of the cooperative research thematic network (RETIC RD06/0045) and the CIBER of Physiopathology of Obesity and Nutrition (CIBERobn).

A total of 7,447 people following major cardiovascular risk factors participated in the study. They were divided into three dietary intervention groups: a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil, a Mediterranean diet supplemented with nuts (walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts), and a low-fat diet (animal and vegetable). A dietician visited the patients every three months and they attended dietary training group sessions, in which they received detailed information about the Mediterranean and the low-fat diet, and the food included in each one. Moreover, they were provided with shopping lists, menus and recipes adapted to each type of diet and each season of the year.

During the study, those participants who followed any of the two types of Mediterranean diet received freely extra-virgin olive oil (one litre per week), and nuts (30 grams per day; 15 grams of walnuts, 7.5 grams of almonds and 7.5 grams of hazelnuts).

After five years, it has been proved that participants who followed any of the two types of Mediterranean diet showed a substantial reduction in the risk of suffering a cardiovascular death, a myocardial infarction or a stroke.

According to the researchers, the results of PREDIMED study are relevant as they prove that a high-vegetable fat diet is healthier at a cardiovascular level than a low-fat diet. The authors state that the study has been controversial as it provides new data to reject the idea that it is necessary to reduce fats in order to improve cardiovascular health.

Hopefully, these results will provide new references to prevent cardiovascular diseases. In addition, the design and methodology used can be easily transferred to the biomedical sector.

The study had the collaboration of several researchers from the Hospital Cl?nic, the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM), the faculties of Medicine of the universities Rovira i Virgili, Navarra, Valencia, Canary Islands and Malaga, as well as the University Hospital Son Espases of Palma, the Fats Institute in Seville, and the primary health care networks of Barcelona, Seville, Tarragona and Valencia.

Little Boots Debuts New Song ?Motorway,? Announces Album - Idolator

Following the fairly quiet releases of Little Boots? songs ?Headphones? and ?Every Night I Say A Prayer? last year, the English electro-pop songstress is set to self-release (via her On Repeat Records imprint) Nocturnes on May 6 ? her official follow-up album to 2009 debut LP Hands. A press release touts the new material as ?a powerful record of irresistible hooks and stunning songwriting that celebrates 90s house, seventies disco and futuristic electronics while maintaining the magic of classic pop.? In other words, we?ll be salivating until this one comes along!

?Every Night I Say A Prayer,? last year?s retro house offering from Little Boots (real name: Victoria Hesketh), made the cut for Nocturnes, and the latest preview from the album, ?Motorway,? can be heard in the video clip below.

Little Boots ???Motorway?

Press materials note that production work on Nocturnes was done by DFA Records co-founder Tim Goldsworthy, while ?other key contributions? were made by Simian Mobile Disco?s James Ford and Hercules and Love Affair?s Andy Butler. We?re certainly digging what we?re hearing so far above, in all its shimmery, Sally Shapiro-esque glory.

Nocturnes tracklist

1. ?Motorway?
2. ?Confusion?
3. ?Broken Record?
4. ?Shake?
5. ?Beat Beat?
6. ?Every Night I Say A Prayer?
7. ?Crescendo?
8. ?Strangers?

Great Advice For profitable Internet Marketing ? Social Networking ...

Novice PC users created impressive businesses, and you can too. Read on for some tips to accomplish your Internet marketing goals. hinh sex

Always get feedback. This is often critical in determining your success, as how you perceive things is not always the same as how others see them. Get feedback from anyone you can, friends, family and potential clients. Take any and all feedback to heart, and do not fear making necessary changes.

Create a blog and link it to your website. Fresh information are preferred by search engines, if you lack this in your site, your ranking will go down. Writing a blog can allow you to consistently add fresh content.

You should include a chat section for customers on your website. People will identify with your brand if they can discuss things they enjoy with people who have similar interests. People are naturally drawn to others with shared interests, which makes them highly likely to bond and connect with your business.

Get together a glossary of terms, and publish it on your site if you want to be an authority at what you do. Customers will find these terms helpful and gain a better understanding of your products as a result. People doing a search for those terms will be more likely to come to your website. You will get more traffic and be considered a reference.

When you use email as a regular form of communication with your customers, make sure you change your links on a regular basis. Anything that is the same will only lead to your customers ignoring the information you are trying to present to them. Customers don't like seeing the same thing repeatedly, and it's important to offer variation to keep them engaged.

Successful internet marketing should include video uploads that have the potential to go viral. Make sure the video description includes a link to your site. This will have a tremendous effect on the number of users who visit your site regularly.

It is helpful to have a 500 error page that is user-friendly. When you have a server problem and the visitor cannot access your site, they will be met with a page telling them about the error instead of having to wait minutes for a page that's not going to load. The generic 500 page doesn't tell visitors anything except that they can't reach the page they wanted. There are better ways to let your users know that you are aware and working to fix the problem.

Put "guarantee" in your internet marketing ads if you can. Your customers want to know they will not get ripped off if they purchase your product. The only limit to what you can guarantee is what you decide it to be. You can try a 90 day guarantee or a lifetime guarantee. Select an appropriate guarantee for each product that you sell.

Look at Internet marketing as something fun and not something that is a job or big chore. You may want to turn it into a career if it turns out that you are talented in this area, but when you are just starting out, it should be seen as something fun rather than something that is profitable.

Internet marketing is not as hard to understand as you think. It's an easy field to get into; you can make use of this article's suggestions immediately to start getting the word out to potential customers online. With the growth of technology, putting your business online can help you reach many more people.

Alcatel-Lucent's latest lightRadio development aims to spread TD-LTE across China

AlcatelLucent's latest lightRadio development aims to spread TDLTE across China

We've yet to hear much about Alcatel-Lucent's lightRadio since it's original introduction in early 2011, but here in Barcelona, the outfit has announced (in cooperation with China Mobile, no less) that its latest innovation could help spread the wondrous waves of TD-LTE across China. Available now for large-scale commercial deployment in China Mobile's first trial TD-LTE network, which spans 13 cities in China, lightRadio Metro Radio will bring legitimate 4G services to residents in densely populated areas of Shanghai, Nanjing and Qingdao.

China Mobile itself has over 722 million subscribers, and a huge swath of those are no doubt clamoring for faster transmission speeds. In China, lightRadio Metro Radio will be deployed in bustling indoor and outdoor locations, such as shopping malls and stadiums, but there's no word on when the masses might expect this stuff to launch in earnest. Here's hoping for a speedy trial, eh?

Study of Chinese hackers is dangled as phishing bait

Attackers are using fake versions of a recently released report about a Chinese cyberespionage group as bait in new spear-phishing attacks that target Japanese and Chinese users.

The report was released Tuesday by security firm Mandiant and documents in great detail the cyberespionage campaigns conducted since 2006 by a hacker group known as the Comment Crew against more than 100 companies and organizations from different industries.

Mandiant refers to the group as APT1 (Advanced Persistent Threat 1) and claims in the report that it's likely a secret Shanghai-based cyberespionage unit of the Chinese Army?the People's Liberation Army (PLA)?code-named "Unit 61398."

The Chinese government has dismissed Mandiant's claims as groundless. However, the report received a lot of attention from people in the IT security industry, as well as from the general public.

It seems that this publicity has now led to attackers deciding to use the report as bait in new targeted attacks.

Malware masquerades as Mandiant report

Two different spear-phishing attacks were discovered last week using emails with malicious attachments that masqueraded as the Mandiant report, said Aviv Raff, the chief technology officer of security firm Seculert.

One attack targeted Japanese-speaking users and involved emails with an attachment called Mandiant.pdf. This PDF file exploits a vulnerability in Adobe Reader that was patched by Adobe in an emergency update Wednesday, security researchers from Seculert said in a blog post.

phishing

The malware installed by the exploit connects to a command-and-control server hosted in Korea, but also contacts some Japanese websites, probably in an attempt to trick security products, the Seculert researchers said.

Symantec has also detected and analyzed the spear-phishing attack. "The email purports to be from someone in the media recommending the report," Symantec researcher Joji Hamada said in a blog post. However, it would be evident for a Japanese person that the email was not written by a native Japanese speaker, he said.

Hamada pointed out that similar tactics have been used in the past. In one incident back in 2011, hackers used a research paper about targeted attacks published by Symantec as bait. "They did this by spamming targets with the actual whitepaper along with malware hidden in an archive attachment," Hamada said.

Exploits old Adobe flaw

The second spear-phishing attack detected targets Chinese-speaking users and uses a malicious attachment called "Mandiant_APT2_Report.pdf."

According to an analysis of the PDF file by researcher Brandon Dixon of security consultancy firm 9b+, the document exploits an older Adobe Reader vulnerability that was discovered and patched in 2011.

The malware installed on the system establishes a connection to a domain that currently points to a server in China, Dixon said via email. "The malware provides attackers with the ability to execute commands on the victim's system."

The domain name contacted by this malware was also used in the past in attacks that targeted Tibetan activists, Seculert's Raff said. Those older attacks installed both Windows and Mac OS X malware, he said.

Greg Walton, a researcher from MalwareLab, a security outfit that tracks politically motivated malware attacks, said on Twitter that the Mandiant-themed spear-phishing attack targeted journalists in China. This information could not be confirmed by Raff or Dixon, who said that they don't have copies of the original spam emails, only of the malicious attachment they contained.

(AP) ? The "Twilight" team finally has earned some love ? or loathing ? from Team Razzies.

"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn ? Part 2" was picked as last year's worst picture Saturday by the Razzies, an Academy Awards spoof that hands out prizes for Hollywood's lousiest movies on the eve of the Oscars.

The finale to the blockbuster supernatural romance dominated the Razzies with seven awards, including worst actress for Kristen Stewart, supporting actor for Taylor Lautner, director for Bill Condon and worst screen couple for Lautner and child co-star Mackenzie Foy.

Adam Sandler was named worst actor for the raunchy comedy "That's My Boy," his second-straight win after 2011's "Jack and Jill," which swept all 10 Razzie categories a year ago. Pop singer Rihanna won worst supporting actress for the action dud "Battleship."

"Twilight" movies had been well represented in Razzie nominations over the years but had not won any key awards there. Razzie voters joke that as with "The Lord of the Rings" finale winning best picture at the Academy Awards, they were waiting for the last "Twilight" flick on which to heap their scorn.

"I have a pet theory, which is that the box office on 'Twilight' films is very impressive, but my theory is that instead of 40 million individual girls going to see it, it's 8 million girls going to see it five times each. People who love those movies just adore them," said Razzies founder John Wilson. "I believe the attitude of people who really love 'Twilight' movies toward this subject is very similar to the pomposity with which the Academy Awards addresses the whole rest of the world. Our whole existence is all about making fun of pompous, so 'Twilight' really is right up our alley."

The "Twilight" finale also won for worst screen ensemble and worst remake, rip-off or sequel. For worst picture, it beat out "Battleship," ''That's My Boy," the family flick "The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure" and Eddie Murphy's comedy flop "A Thousand Words."

Stewart's worst-actress prize came for both "Twilight" and her fairy-tale update "Snow White and the Huntsman."

In the five "Twilight" movies, Stewart stars as sullen teen Bella Swan, who falls for ageless vampire hunk Edward Cullen (worst-actor nominee Robert Pattinson) and finds herself at the center of a love triangle with him and her childhood pal, werewolf stud Jacob Black (Lautner).

Stewart set a consistent standard of emotional stoniness throughout the "Twilight" movies, Wilson said.

"Acting should involve having an expression on your face, and she is blank, other than the morose kind of half-Goth thing her character does," Wilson said. "I didn't realize Snow White and Bella were soul sisters, because of the very limited range of what she can do. I think it was Dorothy Parker who said about Katharine Hepburn that she runs the 'gamut of emotions from A to B.' Kristen Stewart is so expressionless she might as well be a brick wall."

Sandler's "That's My Boy," which also won the worst-screenplay Razzie, flopped at the box office and continues a gradual decline in receipts for the comic actor's movies.

"He's an enormous star who is on what I call the 'down-alator' of his career," Wilson said. "He's about to step off the same cliff Eddie Murphy stepped off about 10 years ago. Eddie Murphy has never come back, and Murphy is more talented."

Sony PS4: All-you-can-eat game subscriptions may be in the works

The Sony PS4 console may house a premium subscription service allowing members to play as many games as they want for a monthly fee, according to the president of Sony Worldwide Studios.

Shuhei Yoshida said Sony has many options with regards to subscription platforms, thanks to the acquisition of Gaikai - the cloud-gaming company that will power and pioneer the PS4's online offerings.

Some observers had expected Sony to reveal a Netflix-for-gamers style service at Tuesday's launch event, but for now that's a 'dream' dependent on digital content flourishing on the console, Yoshida-san said.

He told The Guardian: "As more and more services and contents become available digitally, we'll have more of an option to create attractive packages. So hypothetically we can look at different models ? like a cable TV company. We could have gold, silver or platinum levels of membership, something like that.

"We can do subscription services when we have more content ? especially now that we have the Gaikai technology available. With one subscription you have access to thousands of games ? that's our dream."

Hardware isn't finished yet

Meanwhile Yoshida-san is the latest voice to chime in on why Sony did not reveal the new PlayStation hardware at Wednesday night's PS4 launch event in New York City.

Some Sony bosses have claimed the company wanted to leave something to show off at a later date, so we wouldn't get bored between now and the Holiday 2013 release date, while SCEA gaffer Jack Tretton claimed Sony had made a 'conscious decision' not to show it off.

This latest explanation might be a little closer to the mark.

"We have not finalised the hardware yet and decided not to try to get it finished in time," Yoshida-san said.

New film tells story of unsung civil rights leader

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Just before the March on Washington in 1963, President John F. Kennedy summoned six top civil rights leaders to the White House to talk about his fears that civil rights legislation he was moving through Congress might be undermined if the march turned violent.

Whitney Young Jr. cut through the president's uncertainty with three questions: "President Kennedy, which side are you on? Are you on the side of George Wallace of Alabama? Or are you on the side of justice?"

One of those leaders, John Lewis, later a longtime congressman from Georgia, tells the story of Young's boldness in "The Powerbroker: Whitney Young's Fight for Civil Rights," a documentary airing during Black History Month on the PBS series "Independent Lens" and shown in some community theaters.

In the civil rights struggle, Young was overshadowed by his larger-than-life peer, Martin Luther King Jr. But Young's penetration of white-dominated corporate boardrooms and the Oval Office over three administrations was critical to the movement. Working with leaders within the system, including three presidents, made him a target of criticism by those who wanted a more aggressive path to racial equality.

An appreciation for what Young brought to the movement came after his death in Nigeria in 1971 at age 49. But it was not sustained, said Dennis Dickerson, author of "Militant Mediator: Whitney M. Young Jr."

"He should not be diminished," said Dickerson, a Vanderbilt University history professor who also appears in the film.

A number of schools and facilities have been named for Young. First lady Michelle Obama graduated from a Chicago high school named for him. But his role in economic issues surrounding civil rights has not gotten just due, said Marc Morial, president and CEO of the National Urban League, an organization Young led as executive director from 1961 to 1971. During his tenure the organization greatly expanded.

Young influenced a number of anti-poverty programs such as Job Corps, housing counseling and Head Start, Morial said.

"He was one of the earliest voices who said to corporate America ... that business leaders and the business community had a stake in the development and rebuilding of urban America, but also in the success of civil rights," Morial said.

Born July 31, 1921, in Lincoln Ridge, Ky., Young learned to negotiate with whites from his father, an educated man who ran the all-black Lincoln Institute boarding school, said Bonnie Boswell, the filmmaker and Young's niece.

There, Young's father surreptitiously educated black students to become doctors, lawyers and teachers to escape segregation and poverty while tricking white financial backers of the school into believing he was training the black students to be nannies, maids, janitors and mechanics.

The school campus had been something of a shelter for Young from the everyday cruelty of segregation, but he encountered it head-on when he served in a black Army battalion led by white officers in World War II.

After that experience, Young dedicated himself to race relations. Later he borrowed on the postwar rebuilding of Western Europe to push with President Lyndon B. Johnson his proposal for a domestic Marshall Plan providing $145 billion to improve education, employment and welfare for black communities. Johnson folded some of his ideas into his Great Society programs.

Young overcame the broken relationship between blacks and President Richard M. Nixon to persuade him to heavily support social programs that assisted the poor. Nixon lauded Young's work when he spoke at his funeral.

Young's desire "was to help America live up to her ideals," Boswell said, quoting her uncle.

"He would say, 'I could become more popular if I got off the train in Harlem and shouted bad things about white people, but can I be more effective if I go downtown and help get jobs from white people to give to minorities,'" Boswell said in an interview in Washington with The Associated Press.

Young was able to tell people like industrialist Henry Ford II that they needed to step up and do something about the living and working conditions of blacks in ways that captured their respect, said Nancy Weiss Malkiel, author of the 1989 book "Whitney M. Young Jr. and the Struggle for Civil Rights."

Young was not as visible on the front lines of civil rights protests, but he could say with humor and partly in earnest to members of the white establishment that if they didn't deal with him, they would have to deal with Malcolm X and Stokely Carmichael, who espoused more radical agendas than King, Malkiel said.

Boswell's film airs as the first black president, Barack Obama, begins his second term in office. Obama, whose mother was white and father was black, has endured a racist backlash in his presidency and criticism from within the black community over whether he is doing enough for black Americans.

Dickerson said Young's ideas are a template that Obama has deployed in his political rise. "That is inter-racialism and an emphasis on corporate relations," he said. "That was Whitney Young's mantra and that's the president's mantra."

North American Oil and Gas provides update on California operations

After drilling the Pass Exploration well, on budget, to a total depth of 7,550 feet to test the Tejon Extension prospect, a total of four zones were tested. A small amount of light oil was recovered in one test at depths between 7,120-7,180. North American Oil and Gas Corporation (NAMG), the project operator, has released the rig, pending more detailed petrophysical and geological studies. Additional testing of a shallow zone is anticipated at a later date. NAMG holds a 75% participation interest. East West Petroleum, through its 100%-owned U.S. subsidiary Avere Energy Corp., holds a 25% participation interest in the Tejon Extension prospect.

The Company also announced that ongoing leasing activities in the southern sector of the San Joaquin Basin with EWP has now built the Company's total acreage position to more than 8000 gross acres. The majority of the new acreage additions have been acquired in an emerging new play area named the Project Lani, where NAMG holds a 50% participation interest.

Egypt protesters, police clash at Morsi's palace

CAIRO (AP) ? Thousands of protesters denouncing Egypt's Islamist president marched on his palace in Cairo on Friday, clashing with security forces firing tear gas and water cannons in the eighth day of the country's wave of political violence.

Protests were held in cities around the country on Friday after a call for rallies by opponents of President Mohammed Morsi. But some cracks appeared in the ranks of the opposition as some sharply criticized its political leaders for holding their first meeting with the rival Muslim Brotherhood a day earlier.

Around 60 people have been killed in protests, rioting and clashes that engulfed the country the past week in country's worst crisis since the 2011 fall of autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

Around 6,000 protesters massed outside Morsi's presidential palace in an upscale district of the capital, banging on the gates and throwing stones and shoes into the grounds in a show of contempt. At least one firebomb was thrown through the gates as crowds chanted, "Leave, leave," addressing Morsi.

Security forces inside the palace responded by firing water cannons at the crowd, then volleys of tear gas. A tree inside the palace grounds caught fire. Riot police moved in outside the gates, sending the protesters scattering for cover, but then they surged back.

The streets outside the palace became a scene of mayhem as police fired volley after volley of tear gas trying to drive back the protesters, who rained stones on the riot police. Flames leaped as security forces set fire to protest tents, young men banged on metal fences and threw fireworks, and the beams of laser pointers danced in the smoke.

"This is all because of Morsi!" one protester shouted. At least 15 people were injured in the clashes, police said.

Thousands more rallied in central Tahrir Square, while a larger crowd marched through the Suez Canal city of Port Said, which witnessed the worst clashes and highest casualties, pumping their fists in the air and chanting, "Leave, leave, Morsi."

The wave of protests began around rallies marking the second anniversary of the uprising that toppled Mubarak. The unrest was prompted by public anger that Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood are monopolizing power and have failed to deal with the country's mounting woes.

But outrage has been further fueled by Morsi's public backing of what was seen as security forces' use of excessive force against protesters last weekend, particular in Port Said, where around 40 people were killed.

Amid the escalating tensions the past week, there have been fears of direct clashes between Morsi's opponents and his Islamist backers. Such battles broke out at the palace in December during an earlier wave of unrest, when Islamists attacked an anti-Morsi sit-in, prompting fighting that left around 10 dead.

A Brotherhood spokesman, Ahmed Arif, underlined on Friday that the group would not call its cadres into the streets. But a young Brotherhood member said the group's members were ordered to gather in a mosque near the presidential palace, as a "precautionary measure" in case anti-Morsi protests turned violent. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press.

The government, meanwhile, has increasingly blamed violence on a group of protesters called the Black Bloc, who wear black masks and have vowed to "defend the revolution." Officials and state media depict them as conspiratorial saboteurs, but the opposition says authorities are using the group as a scapegoat to justify a crackdown.

Nearly 20 masked protesters are among hundreds arrested around the country the past week. Egypt's official news agency said on Thursday that a member of the Black Bloc was arrested with "Israeli plans" and maps to target vital institutions ? recalling past allegations by Mubarak-era security officials that opponents were carrying out Israeli interests.

"There's a great deal of exaggeration concerning the Black Bloc group," said Gamal Fahmy, an opposition figure. "It hasn't been proven that the group has committed violence, these are just calls over the social media."

"This is an attempt from the Muslim Brotherhood to blackmail the opposition," by depicting the anti-Morsi movement as violent, he said.

The eruption of violence prompted Morsi last Sunday to declare a state of emergency and curfew in Port Said and two other Suez Canal cities, where angry residents have defied the restrictions with nightly rallies.

Thousands marched on Friday through Port Said, located at the Canal's Mediterranean end, pumping their fists and chanting, "Leave, leave, Morsi." They threatened to escalate pressure with civil disobedience and a work stoppage at the vital Suez Canal authority if their demand for punishment of those responsible for protester death is not met.

"The people want the Republic of Port Said," protesters chanted, voicing a wide sentiment among residents that they are fed up of negligence and mistreatment by central government and that they want to virtual independence.

Buses brought protesters from the two other Suez Canal cities of Suez and Ismailia to join the Port Said rallies.

Friday marked the first anniversary of a mass soccer riot in Port Said that left 74 people dead, mostly fans of Al-Ahly, Egypt's most popular soccer team, which was playing a local Port Said team, Al-Masry.

The past weekend's violence in Port Said was sparked when a court convicted 21 people, mostly locals, in the soccer deaths, a verdict residents saw as unjust and political. Over the next few days, around 40 people were killed in the city in unrest that saw security forces firing on a funeral.

Egypt's main opposition political grouping, the National Salvation Front, called for Friday's protests in Cairo, demanding Morsi form a national unity government and amend the constitution, moves they say would prevent the Islamist from governing solely in the interest of his Muslim Brotherhood group.

"The policies of the president and the Muslim Brotherhood are pushing the country to the brink," the opposition said in a statement.

However, the call came a day after the Front held a meeting with Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood under the aegis of Egypt's premier Islamic institution, Al-Azhar, in their first ever meeting. They and other politicians signed a joint statement denouncing violence.

The meeting appeared to have caused rifts within the opposition, with some saying the Front had handed the Brotherhood the high ground by signing a statement that seemed to focus on protester violence and made no mention of police use of excessive force or explicitly talk of political demands.

"Al-Azhar's initiative talks too broadly about violence as if it's the same to kill a person or break a window and makes no difference between defensive violence and aggressive violence, offering a political cover to expand the repression, detention, killing and torture by the hands of police for the authority's benefit," read a joint statement by 70 activists, liberal politicians, actors and writers.

"The initiative didn't represent the core of the problem and didn't offer solutions but came to give more legitimacy to the existing authority," it added.

Those who attended the Thursday's rare meeting between Egypt's rival political camps defended the anti-violence initiative.

Egypt's leading pro-democracy advocate Mohammed ElBaradei and a Front leader described allegations that the Front is making political compromises them as "intentional attempt to split the ranks."

"We toppled down Mubarak regime with a peaceful revolution. We insist on achieving the goals the same way whatever the sacrifices and the barbaric suppression tactics," the Nobel peace Laureate tweeted.

Ahmed Maher, co-founder of April 6 group which led the anti-Mubarak uprising, said in a tweet: "I am against violence as a solution." An opposition party leader Ahmed Said said in a statement, "no one can say no to an initiative to stop violence."

Outcomes of cartilage tympanoplasty in the pediatric population

Feb. 1, 2013 ? Cartilage tympanoplasty can be performed successfully in 95 percent of young children when appropriate conditions exist, according to a study in the February 2013 issue of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.

"Pediatric tympanoplasty is a frequently performed procedure with varying reported success rates ranging between 35 percent and 94 percent. In general, tympanic membrane repair success in children is often perceived as lagging behind what is typically achieved in adults having similar underlying risk factors," the authors write.

The study was conducted at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, AR. One hundred and nineteen pediatric patients who underwent type I cartilage tympanoplasty to repair a tympanic membrane perforation from August 2005 to November 2011 were divided into three age groups: under 7, 7-9, and 10-13 years old.

The success rates for the three groups were 93 percent, 95 percent, and 97.2 percent, respectively. Statistical analysis was used to test the differences among age groups in regard to remnant perforation, the need for revision tympanoplasty, and the need for tympanoplasty tubes.

The study had an average success rate of 95 percent among the three groups. Repair rates improved, and significant impairments in hearing outcomes were avoided. If tympanoplasty is scheduled accurately, concluded the authors, the age of the patient does not affect the rate of tympanic membrane repair or hearing outcomes.

In summary, the results of the study were promising, and the authors determined that "the use of cartilage in pediatric type I tympanoplasty for tympanic membrane perforation repair results in excellent outcomes that are comparable to the best-case outcomes that have been reported in the adult population."
