Scientists bring low frequency, 'first light' to the Jansky Very Large Array

Monday, July 23, 2012

U.S. Naval Research Laboratory scientists from the Radio Astrophysics and Sensing Section of the Remote Sensing Division in conjunction with radio astronomers and engineers from the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), Socorro, N.M., achieve "First Light" image, May 1, 2012, at frequencies below 1-gigahertz (GHz) on the Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA).

Through the combined expertise of NRL and NRAO scientists and engineers, a new, modern, wide-band receiver system has been developed and is being deployed onboard the JVLA to enable much more sensitive observations over a much broader frequency range extending from 50 megahertz to 500 megahertz (MHz).

Using the first five of the 27 new very high-frequency (VHF) receivers successfully brought into operation, astronomer Dr. Frazer Owen, NRAO, reached an important milestone, mapping the radio sky at 337 MHz.

"The use of over 100 megahertz of bandwidth in the first image is a dramatic illustration of the breakthrough to instantaneous wideband systems at frequencies below one gigahertz," said Dr. Namir Kassim, section head, NRL Radio Astrophysics Section. "This represents a poorly explored part of the electromagnetic spectrum that is important for ionospheric and astrophysical research and to the Navy's mission for navigation and communications."

This demonstration of interferometric imaging is a key milestone. It is strong verification that the new receivers have the sensitivity, stability, and coherence critical to the needs of the international radio and space science communities, with key benefits for both astronomical and ionospheric science applications.

Although not yet at full capability, by summer 2013 all 27 of the 25-meter telescopes of the JVLA will be outfitted with the new receivers.

In 2011, an upgrade to the receivers on the JVLA sacrificed the observatory's capability for operation at VHF frequencies between 30 MHz and 300 MHz, a shortcoming for the JVLA but a decision made necessary by complex technical and fiscal constraints.

"The loss of low-frequency capability to the world's most powerful radio telescope was a set-back not only to the radio research community, but to continued astrophysics and ionospheric work critical to the needs of Navy communications and navigation," says Dr. Tracy Clarke, NRL radio astronomer. "With the new greatly improved receivers and the demonstration that they work well with the JVLA, scientists are once again able to explore with greater veracity the low-frequency radio bands for high sensitivity astrophysics and high accuracy ionospheric research."

At present, the lack of detailed understanding of the structure of the ionosphere has been a major limiting factor in the ultimate accuracy of GPS measurements, even in times of a relatively quiet ionosphere. This new capability will open previously, poorly explored regions of the electromagnetic spectrum to astrophysical and ionospheric communities, providing high-resolution images of celestial radio emitters and subsequently opening a new area of ionospheric physics, modeling, and prediction.

The Very Large Array (VLA) radio astronomy observatory ? renamed in 2012 for American physicist and radio engineer, Karl Guthe Jansky, who in 1931 discovered radio waves emanating from the Milky Way ? is considered the largest and most capable radio telescope in the world and is funded under cooperative agreement between the National Science Foundation (NSF) and Associated Universities, Inc. (AUI).

In the 1980s, collaboration between NRL and NRAO helped develop the 330 MHz Very Large Array system that has been widely and successfully used in astrophysics and ionospheric science for many years. In the 1990s, NRL, again working closely with NRAO, developed and deployed a narrow band receiver system operating at 74 MHz, so called the '4-band' system for its operating wavelength of nearly 4 meters. While the 4-band system served the international astrophysics and ionospheric communities well for more than 10 years, by the 2000s, the VLA was sorely in need of an upgrade. NRL and NRAO scientists, together with the JVLA's broad international users community are understandably enthusiastic about this newly restored and greatly improved capability becoming fully operational in the coming year.

Ayres named new Eastside baseball coach

COVINGTON -- Finding a coach like Jon Ayres this late in the season is like finding a No. 1 draft pick in the final round.

Ayres has been a head coach for 21 years at three different schools including his last school, Golden Gate High School (Naples, Fla.). Prior to becoming a head coach, Ayres served as an assistant coach for four years.

Aside from coaching, Ayres has worked with various college camps and worked as an associate scout for the Atlanta Braves.

"I've been part of two state championship teams, one in New York and one in Florida," Ayres said. "I've worked a lot of college baseball camps over the years at Florida State, Stenson and Vanderbilt."

Even though Ayres has not had a chance to get to know any of the players or parents, he feels that if they came out in the numbers that did just to meet him the that shows a lot about their dedication and willingness to do what it takes to have a successful season.

"This is the first time I've had a chance to meet any of the players or parents. I'm looking forward to getting started with them," Ayres said. "I know they're very enthusiastic and excited. This is good evidence of it to have these many people come to this meeting to meet the new coach."

The Eagles baseball team has been to the Class AAA state championship tournament the last four years straight including making it the second round three of the last four years. Ayres, who has been made 14 region appearances in his coaching experience, knows what to do to possibly take them all the way.

"We want to concentrate on working hard and doing things right with an attention to details. We're going to do things with sportsmanship, integrity and class. We don't want to be out-hustled and we don't want to be outclassed when we're on the baseball field. I think that we have to a goal of peaking at the right time of the year. We have to play the type of schedule that will help us prepare for postseason play," Ayres said.

"I'm very excited to getting started and I'm looking forward to it."

89% Polisse

"Polisse" synopsis is so dull and poor that I am glad I had not read it before watching the movie. The "journalist covering police assigned to a juvenile division that enters an affair with one of her subjects" is only part of a wider and more complex quilt of characters and interesting stories.Ma?wenn brings up the dirty and dark side of Paris with the help of an excellent team of child actors - Malonn L?vana, the lovely little girl of "Tomboy" (where she plays the sister of the leading character) is someone to keep an eye on - and the best known actors of the French cinema of today: Marina Fo?s, Sandrine Kiberlain, Nicolas Duvauchelle, Fr?d?ric Pierrot, Karin Viard, Louis-Do de Lencquesaing, Alice de Lencquesaing (L'heure d'?t?, Le p?re de mes enfants), J?r?mie Elka?m (La guerre est d?clar?e), Karole Rocher, and others. This team of stars, however, can be a double-edged sword: at the same time it calls the attention and arouses curiosity, it can also hinder the identification with the characters and/or concentration. It was just me, perhaps, but every time a known face appeared on the screen, my mind would unplug and try to remember in which movie I had seen that actor. Despite the great cast and some memorable moments, "Polisse" is average. It looks like a police tv drama show, both in format and melodrama, but a very good one it?s true. If made for tv, all the crucial subjects raised by Ma?wenn - such as pedophilia, social welfare, immigration, violence - could be better placed and developed, taking in mind the way she chose to portray them. Choices, by the way, seem to be carefully taken. Melissa ?s "ugly panties" being childlike and having the saying "spank me" that she didn?t know what means may work as an alert on how we collaborate with these sexual "fair tale" fantasies. The saying in English (spank me) may also be a criticism on our contemporary times where we usually follow global and standardized models/ideas, sometimes without really knowing or thinking about what they mean, what can be also seen, let?s say, in the episode of the "telephone teenager girl". "But it was a smartphone". Although I don't think "Polisse" is that good, Ma?wenn definitely got my attention. I liked a lot her character Melissa and how it develops and grow as the story unfolds; I was delighted with the funny discussion over the changes in the French language (on how we are killing our language); and the final scene really impressed me - the ending can be melodramatic as said Peter Bradshaw, but definitely not unconvincing. That said, I will sure check Ma?wenn's previous movies and will be waiting for more.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) ? The women assaulted by their Air Force training instructor don't sleep much these days and when they do, he sometimes haunts their dreams.

They testified Saturday about being suddenly unable to relate to husbands, boyfriends and even fathers and brothers after they were sexually assaulted. One said her fear during a tour of duty in Afghanistan was heightened by soldiers who reminded her of her instructor, and she warned her younger sister not to enlist in the Air Force. Another said she's now afraid to be behind closed doors with any man.

Staff Sgt. Luis Walker was sentenced to 20 years in prison Saturday for crimes that included rape and sexual assault. He is among 12 instructors investigated for sexual misconduct toward at least 31 female trainees at one of the nation's busiest military training centers. Six have been charged with crimes, and the counts against Walker were the most severe. He could have faced life in prison.

Prosecutors say he used his position as a military trainer at Lackland Air Force base in San Antonio to gain female recruits' trust, and then he made illicit sexual advances. Walker's court-martial included testimony from 10 women, one of whom wept as she described him luring her into his base office and sexually assaulting her on a bed, ignoring her pleas to stop.

Walker showed little emotion as the sentence was read, but he appeared to have tears on his face later as he gazed at his wife, Yeimi. Both had cried earlier, while asking the military jury for leniency and a shorter sentence so that he would be able to spend time with his two sons, ages 7 and 4.

"I ask for my family's sake, for my two boys right there," Walker said, wheeling around to look at the youngsters, who sat squirming and chattering back and forth with no understanding of the proceedings. "I ask that I am allowed to have a future with them."

Walker's stepfather, sister and wife all testified on his behalf, describing an earnest teen who grew up in a tough corner of Brooklyn, dreamed of joining the Air Force from the age of 14 and arranged to graduate from high school early so he could enlist.

"All of his dreams are shattered and our dreams because I was so proud of him," said Herbert O'Connor, Walker's stepfather.

Walker was taken after the hearing to a temporary lockup at Lackland to await transfer to a permanent prison.

The six men and woman who served on the military jury are barred from discussing their deliberations so it's impossible to know if the testimony swayed. But the victims' testimony was equally as emotional. Five spoke during sentencing, including four who are still in the service.

"In Afghanistan, I was a little bit more scared of everything," said one, who said Walker sexually assaulted her last year, while she was a trainee at Lackland.

"I couldn't work with certain individuals," she added, "just since they remind me of Staff Sgt. Walker."

Prosecutors say Walker sexually assaulted or had improper sexual or personal contact with at least 10 female recruits from October 2010 through January 2011. The Associated Press does not usually identify victims of sexually assault.

The same victim said her 15-year-old sister talked about joining the Air Force, and "I've absolutely told her she's not allowed anywhere near" it. Other victims said they had the same advice for female relatives and friends.

"I don't enjoy the military anymore," one said. "I don't want to be in it."

Another victim spoke of being unable to sleep at night "because I somehow feel he terrifies me." That victim also said the trauma she felt from the assault continued to plague her after she left the military.

It's gotten to where I had anger issues even at work," she said. "If anyone makes even the slightest sexual reference, I go off. I have zero self-control."

Lackland is where all Air Force recruits go through basic training. It has about 475 instructors for about 35,000 airmen who graduate every year. While one in five recruits are female, most instructors are male.

While the alleged sexual misconduct among instructors at the base apparently began in 2009, the first woman didn't come forward until last year. The women who testified against Walker said they didn't tell anybody at first because they feared being booted from the Air Force.

But even those who remained in the service said their careers had been ruined by fear, along with every other part of their lives.

"Every time I'm smiling or I'm laughing, I feel like its fake because I'm empty," one said. "I'm not happy on the inside anymore. I'm not myself."
