(AP) ? A Vermont man who authorities said used a large farm tractor like a monster truck and drove over seven police vehicles, then tried to run over two officers who pursued him, was ordered held on $50,000 bail Friday.

Orleans County sheriffs said Roger Pion, 34, of Newport, was angry over a recent arrest for resisting arrest and marijuana possession when he drove the tractor into the parking lot of the sheriff's department and rolled it multiple times across cruisers and a transport van parked in the lot. No one was injured in Thursday's incident.

Sworn police statements filed at the court said Pion would face 14 charges. The most serious one, felony aggravated assault on a police officer, carries a penalty of up to 16 years in prison.

Sheriffs said that after Pion left their lot, they were unable to pursue him because they had no intact vehicles. When two Newport City officers chased him, he suddenly started backing the tractor toward them.

"I backed up in fear of our safety about ten to fifteen feet before bumping into another vehicle," wrote Newport Officer Tanner Jacobs, adding that "at this point the tractor was still backing up." He said he and his partner then left their vehicle to avoid getting run over.

Converging city and state police and county sheriffs then surrounded Pion and ordered him from the tractor at gunpoint. He was found to be carrying a loaded pistol, authorities said. Sheriff's deputies got there in a borrowed civilian vehicle.

Defense attorney David Sleigh said he would seek to have the aggravated assault charge dismissed.

"There was no actual contact. He never came into threatening proximity of anyone," Sleigh said. "I understand if these deputies were annoyed, and there may be a personal measure of retribution" reflected in the aggravated assault charge. "But that does not equate to proof."

After Pion's court appearance Friday, sheriff's deputies and fire and rescue crews in neighboring Derby, where the sheriff's department is located, were trying to salvage what they could from the crushed cruisers. They were using tools usually used to extract crash victims from crushed vehicles to pry open the cruisers' trunks.

Chief Deputy Philip Brooks marveled that the rifle, shotgun and other items stored in his cruiser's trunk were unharmed. "Even my hat held its shape," he said.

Brooks said the department moved into the former bank building in December. There was no video surveillance of the ungated parking lot. "I'm certain the security issues will be revisited," he said.

Several other sheriffs' departments around Vermont offered to lend cruisers to Orleans County. State police offered cars they were preparing for auction.

Sheriff Kirk Martin said in an interview at the county courthouse that he was in Boston, preparing to attend a Red Sox game on Law Enforcement Appreciation Day at Fenway Park, when he got word of the vehicular carnage back home. He hurried back north, with New Hampshire and Vermont State Police escorting him.

Martin missed the game, in which Boston lost to the Minnesota Twins, 5-0. "Even watching them lose yesterday would have been better" than what he came home to, he said.

Reassess Your Fitness Goals | The Best Life Blog: Fitness, Weight ...

Posted By Team Best Life on August 5, 2012

How close are you to achieving your fitness goals? With the year more than halfway through, now is the perfect time to evaluate where you are on the continuum of success. Then, you can either create some new goals for yourself if you?ve already accomplished all you set out to do this year, or come up with a new plan if you?re not making the progress you hoped.

Where should you start? Use this three-step plan:

Step One: Set a goal.
Research has shown that goal-setting can help you stick with an exercise program. A study conducted at the YMCA of Metropolitan Atlanta found that people who set goals were more than twice as likely to continue exercising as people who didn?t.

You should try to set two different types of goals. The first should focus on the specific, long-term results you hope to see. What is the number on the scale you?re going for or the size pants you want to fit into? Maybe your goal will be to just stay at the weight you?ve achieved.

The second type should take into account how much you want to accomplish in terms of your physical ability. Do you want to eventually run a 10K, or increase your strength enough to do three sets of chin-ups? Do you want to walk an hour each day or turn up the miles per hour on the treadmill? Give yourself an exact objective and when you accomplish it, give yourself another. If you continually have something to strive for, you?re never going to get bored.

Step Two: Make sure your goal is realistic.
It?s not important how big your goal is, but rather that your goal is reasonably challenging. Take your genetics, body type and lifestyle into account, and reassess how much weight you can realistically lose and how much time you can devote to exercise. Sure, you should strive to make more time in your life for activity, but don?t set yourself up for failure by setting a goal you can never meet, or sacrificing other parts of your life, like family and friendship.

If you?ve struggled to reach a goal that you?ve set yourself in the past, ask yourself why. Have you bitten off more than you can chew? Perhaps you need a new strategy. If you have proven again and again that you can?t make it to the gym after work, for instance, don?t make that your goal. Aim for something else, like taking a walk during lunch or doing an exercise DVD before you leave for work in the morning.

Step Three: Remind yourself why you want to be active.
Make a list of all the reasons you?ve committed to an exercise plan or set a specific fitness goal for yourself. Then, whenever you?re tempted to skip a workout or simply need a boost, read it over.

Your ultimate goal is to attain your best life. Make sure all your little goals?whether it?s to make it to kickboxing class twice a week or to start taking the stairs at work (yes, all 10 flights!)?move you in that direction.

All About Vignettes: Diamond Antiques and Gifts

Whenever I go to my home town, no family visit is complete without a shopping excursion. ?One of my favorite stops is Diamond Antiques. ?Recently I was so excited when the owner, Dianna, told me that she was moving to a larger location. ?She was purchasing a landmark building, Van Sciver's Paint and Wall Coverings.? I remember buying paint and wallpaper there on many occasions.

Dianna told me that she wanted to preserve something from the original store.? In her trademark thoughtful style she incorporated the heart that dotted the "i" on the original sign into her new signage.? She also reserved a section in the store where vendors can display local memorabilia that they have for sale.

Not only did she renovate the building in record time, but she also filled two floors with fabulous vendors, twenty five to be exact.? I enjoyed catching up with the vendors I knew and meeting the new equally sweet and helpful new dealers too.? I like the fact that these knowledgeable vendors will be? working in the shop.

My Mom, my sister and I attended the Grand Opening and had so much fun shopping--and sampling their refreshments.? The zuchini bread was especially delicious.

Please enjoy the snippets that I snapped.
    ?

As you can see, there's something for everyone.
?I hope you can stop by if you're in the Pittsburgh area.

You know how I like animal prints.? But, I just couldn't wrap myself around the idea of a fur coat when it was 90 degrees outside.? I bought some other goodies too.

Stompy gets off the ground with a Kickstarter buy a ride on a 2ton hexabot

In June we were promised a Kickstarter for Project Hexapod's 10-foot tall, two-ton Stompy. We're happy to report that Gui Cavalcanti and his cohorts (James Whong and Dan Cody) at the Artisan's Asylum weren't kidding. This morning the page went live and you can officially pledge your support for rideable six-legged robots. Now that the chassis is 80 percent through the design phase, the half-scale prototype leg (Gimpy) has proven its mettle, and the full-size prototype leg has been designed and the necessary parts ordered, it's time to start lining up funding for the final project. You know how it works: you pledge a certain amount of money and in return you receive a particular level of reward. Don't have much to offer? For just $5 the team will scale the White Mountains and shout your name from the top, while $10 will get you get you something a bit more tangible -- a bumper sticker that reads "my other car has six legs."

Babies Toddler ? What Most Websites Are Badly Informed About ...

It?s pretty easy to practice baby skin care but that doesn?t mean that you shouldn?t familiarize yourself with at least a few basic techniques. Usually this is just common sense: things like protecting your baby from terrible weather and keeping her (or him) dry and warm. Of course, there are some things that aren?t so obvious that you need to know as well, like taking care not to wash or bathe your baby too often. The following are some useful baby skin care tips that can help your baby avoid many skin problems.

Make sure that while taking care of your baby?s skin that you take a moment to look at their lips from time to time. Whenever you take your baby outside, they should wear lip balm on their lips to protect them from the elements. Keep in mind that babies? lips are very susceptible to the sun or wind and can become chapped quickly. Using petroleum jelly, or some type of gentle lip balm, will prevent this from happening. People that live in cold climates should use lip balm or petroleum jelly on their babies? lips, or just keep them inside when the weather is really bad. As a good parent, you will always be sure to moisturize your babies? skin and lips when the weather is bad. When you massage your baby?s skin, you are giving them the healthiest treatment possible. This is a dual purpose treatment because it not only calms your baby, but also gives you both a bonding opportunity. It will have a positive influence on their skin. When you consider the restful feeling massage encourages; right before your baby goes to sleep or after their bath would be the perfect time to do it. You will certainly enhance your baby?s sleep experience with a massage. With a little time you will know exactly what type of touch will be the most effective. You should start massaging the body from the feet and move upwards. You will need to be in tune with your baby?s needs when it comes to how much and how long you need to maintain massage with your child.

Certain ingredients can cause skin irritations and should be avoided. Make sure to actually read the ingredients label on any baby product you want to purchase.

There are lots of ingredients that can irritate the skin or cause a rash like dyes, fragrances, parabens and phthalates. Lots of things like these can cause issues for adults too, but babies skin is super sensitive. If you get all natural or organic baby skin care products, there?s much less of a chance of such problems occurring. If you notice that your son or daughter is particularly sensitive to a certain product, you need to try a different product. Babies sometimes have allergies to specific substances and it is important to be aware of the way that your baby reacts to every single thing that you applies. Baby skin care is something to be aware of at all times, as many different things can cause irritations. Your baby will have healthier skin when you avoid unnecessary wetness and bathe them often. You need to be aware of the impact the wind, drafts and the sun can have. You pets can have a direct influence on your baby?s health because of the risk of an allergic reaction to their dander or even the risk of a flea problem. You should now be well armed to keep your baby safe from some of the everyday hazards and will be able to provide a safe and secure environment.

Jermaine Jackson says he regrets family feud

He also said he no longer supported a letter calling on the estate's executors to step down. (AP Photo/Ronald Zak, File)

Jermaine Jackson called Wednesday for an end to the public feud that has embroiled his family for more than a week, saying issues over the care of his mother and with late brother Michael's estate should be handled privately.

Jackson wrote in a statement first released to The Associated Press that he regrets the public turmoil that resulted from his mother Katherine's 10-day trip to an Arizona spa. The trip sparked a missing person's report and a driveway confrontation between relatives at the home of Katherine Jackson before a judge stripped her of guardianship duties.

"Mistakes have been made and irrational things have been said on both sides in a highly charged emotional environment," Jermaine Jackson wrote. "It is time for us all to draw a line in the sand and move towards peace, co-operation, love and healing."

The Jackson family is still raw from the death of the pop superstar three years ago, Jermaine Jackson wrote, and his mother has endured incredible stress and pressures since then.

He said he remains concerned about his brother's estate but is dropping support for a letter leaked two weeks ago that called on executors of the estate to resign.

Jermaine Jackson said his statement was prompted after his son asked if he could no longer visit Katherine Jackson at her suburban Calabasas home.

"After much soul-searching, it is clearly time for us to live by Michael's words about love not war," he wrote.

At the request of an attorney for TJ Jackson, temporary guardian of Michael Jackson's children, the estate has acknowledged it has blocked certain relatives from visiting the home. The family members were not named.

Attorneys are still trying to untangle some of the issues that the family dispute has created. Katherine Jackson's attorney Perry Sanders Jr. said attorneys will return to court Thursday to present an agreement to restore his client as a guardian.

The agreement would also call for TJ Jackson to remain a co-guardian, with control over the staff and day-to-day operations of the home where Katherine Jackson and her grandchildren Prince, Paris and Blanket currently live. Sanders has said the arrangement will allow Katherine Jackson to focus on the children's upbringing and not on other financial or logistics issues.

The co-guardianship arrangement would also allow either Katherine Jackson, 82, or TJ Jackson, 34, to serve as sole guardian if the other were no longer able to serve.

Jermaine Jackson's statement offers a detailed account of why he, brother Randy and sisters Janet and Rebbie felt it was necessary to isolate their mother recently.

"We simply worried that a call home would first entail, or lead to, conversations with individuals we are in dispute with and that would, therefore, increase pressure on Mother ? and pressure was what a doctor said she didn't need," he wrote.

He said by the time of the driveway confrontation on July 23, "it was clear that mutual suspicions had allowed events to spiral out of control." He said that he, Randy and Janet Jackson went to the Calabasas home try to talk to the children.

"I regret that events were ever allowed to reach such a stage," he wrote. "I regret any distress caused to Prince, Paris and Blanket. That was never, ever the intention of myself, Janet, Rebbie or Randy."

Syrian refugees make Lebanese school their home, for now

AL-MARJ, Lebanon (Reuters) - Messages broadcast from mosque loudspeakers warned residents of Damascus neighborhoods to leave their homes and helicopter gunships spitting bullets made sure they heeded the call.

Now home for 18 families from the Syrian capital is a school building in Lebanon's Bekaa Vally.

But they claim they have been left to their fate by Lebanese authorities and international aid agencies. And when school restarts after the summer vacation, they have no idea where they will go.

The families are part of an exodus to neighboring Lebanon of Syrians seeking refuge from what is now a civil war. The conflict is in its 17th month and edging ever closer to President Bashar al-Assad's seat of power in Damascus.

Syrians living in Damascus watched with horror for months as the violence inched closer, and then rebel and government forces clashed in the streets of residential suburbs such as Sayyida Zeinab.

"Suddenly, in the dead of night, the mosque imams called out to us through loudspeakers 'We urge the people of Sayyida Zeinab to flee their homes,'" said Abu Abdulrahman at the school in the Lebanese village of al-Marj.

His wife and three-year-old daughter fled to a neighboring area hoping to soon return. But two days later a helicopter fired at a funeral in Sayyida Zeinab.

"I carried dozens of corpses back to the mosque. Some families buried them in secret. The next day I left with the clothes on my back," Abu Abdulrahman said.

His 19-year-old Iraqi wife, who fled to Syria after the U.S.-led invasion in 2003, found herself on the move again.

"I feel safer, at least my daughter sleeps through the night now," she told Reuters, sitting on a student's chair and hiding her face with a purple patterned scarf.

But she is still mourning the death of her three-day-old baby, who died from smoke inhalation after a huge explosion in May soon after she had given birth in the local hospital.

    MASKED MEN

The story of Abu Abdulrahman and his family is similar to the 17 other families who have made the school in al-Marj, a village of 12,000, their temporary home.

Most fled Damascus in mid-July when rebels took over parts of the capital and the army counter-attacked.

Some say masked men came to their door, others say notes were slipped under front doors. All left their homes behind, taking only identification papers and a few changes of clothes, perhaps in the hope they may return soon.

"Everything in my house is new, I've been building it for four years and I haven't had time to enjoy it," a woman in a yellow robe and black scarf said as she watched her 40-day-old baby sleep in a pink-and-white crib.

The Marj Secondary School has quickly taken on the aura of a refugee camp.

Desks and chairs are stacked in corridors to make room for families in classrooms. Children mop the floors to keep up a semblance of an orderly home.

Clothes lines hang from window latches. Foam mattresses, with bags of bread lying on top, are stacked near walls.

Students' cubicles have been converted into mini-pharmacies stocked with medicine.

    TURNING BACK FAMILIES

Bashir Jarrah, who is organizing the temporary refugee centre, says the school is filled to capacity with 67 people, of whom 25 are children.

"Every day we have to turn back three of four families," he told Reuters in the classroom-turned-office.

"The international organizations come and ask what we need and then they disappear," he said, showing a notebook in which he had written the names of organizations that had visited - the Danish Refugee Council and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees agency.

"The government hasn't expressed interest. Once a week, someone from the police comes and asks how many refugees are here and then they leave," he said.

The school is running mostly on donations, he said. Two weeks ago Saudi tourists stopped by the school, gave each family $200 and provided a further $3,000 for community leaders to run the school as a refugee centre.

Some restaurants provide meals for Muslims to break their fast during Ramadan and other residents gave some money. But it is not clear what will happen to the refugees once the school year starts in September.

"You can't tell whether it's night or day in the school. There's so much noise, it's just not a life," said a man sitting in the corridor with his 7-month-old baby on his lap. "All I can think about is when school starts, where are we going to go?"

Jordan recently set up a camp to accommodate refugees pouring into its borders but the idea is particularly sensitive in Lebanon, where the government is dominated by Shi'ite Hezbollah and its allies and does not want to be seen as taking sides in the conflict.

Many of those fleeing are from Syria's Sunni majority while Assad and his confidantes are mostly Alawite, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam.

The UNHCR has registered about 35,000 Syrian refugees in Lebanon but several thousand others are also thought to be there - a reversal of the situation in 2006 when Syrians offered shelter to Lebanese fleeing an Israeli offensive against Hezbollah guerrillas.

"If the situation lasts in Syria through next winter and beyond, then we, the international community and the Lebanese government have to think of a more sustainable solution for the refugees in Lebanon," said Jurg Montani, the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Lebanon.

Jarrah lamented what he described as the government's slow response to dealing with the crisis.

"They have to deal with the situation in a humanitarian manner and not a political one. The Syrians hosted us in their homes and schools during the 2006 war, why are we treating them differently?"
